In an earlier interview, Audi Technical Development chief Michael Dick said the A1 would be "manlier and sportier" than the MINI Cooper.
And he was right. This car has a sleek, shapely front-end that seems to form a menacing grin, and rear tail-lights that virtually stare down trailing motorists. This car rides on classy, lightweight, ten-spoke wheels. Inside the cabin, the Metroproject has impressively clean lines, what appears to be paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, and a built-in MP3 player. On top of everything else, you can seemingly keep track of this car's status on your mobile phone!
The Audi Metroproject Quattro, has a battery pack in visibly mounted in the boot, and lit in tranquil blue lights with a charge indicator on the side. We had heard rumor that this concept would be a hybrid, and it certainly seems that way.
The supermini Audi A1 should be available with a turbocharged gas engine, turbocharged diesel engine, ranging in size from 1.2 litres to 2.0 litres. A base model with an 80 horsepower, naturally aspirated 1.4 litre engine is also expected to hit showroom floors.
With a base price at-or-below $25,500, Audi hopes their MINI-killer will sell between 80,000 and 100,000 per year. Audi has done such a good job with the design of this car, that sales of the Fiat 500 might also be affected. Although previously expected at the Frankfurt show last September, the Audi Metroproject Quattro concept will be revealed to the public in person at 10:30 a.m. Tokyo time on October 24th, at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show. Production on the Audi A1 is scheduled for 2009.
Dick also said, "When a father sits gladly in his daughter's car, then we've got it spot on."

Poate inca nu ne-am obisnuit noi cu acest design, dar daca va incepe de la cca 20,000 versiunea de baza, nu prea are cum sa afecteze vanzarile lui 500, poate doar ale lui Mini, care mi se pare oricum mai spatios dar a devenit acum prea comun pt fitze. Iar targetul pare sa fie fetele de bani gata si culoarea aleasa pt prima prezentare este in ton cu asta ... si fetele de bani gata nu au nevoie de prea mult spatiu.

CAR magazine UK has reported on its candid conversation with Audi executives regarding the A1. According to CAR, the A1 will not only come in hatchback form but also as cabriolet and estate models potentially including quattro AWD.
"We will start with the three-door version with several different engine variants," Schwarzenbauer told CAR. "Will we do further models? Look at what we do with the A3 range - we could something similar with the A1."
That means probably anything from a 1.2-litre up to 1.8-litre turbo units, both petrol and diesel. Because the A1 will be a direct rival to the MINI, which is busy testing an electric model (MINI e), it may be safe to assume that alternative power sources are also on the cards here. We'd definitely be up for a performance S1 as well. And since MINI has all sorts of variations, including SUVs, two-seat Coupes and Roadsters coming up, expect the A1 to follow suit with similar offerings and even a possible Q1 SUV.
In terms of basic looks Audi has already given clues through the Metroproject Concept car (pictured here). The A1 is very important to Ingolstadt as it will add greater volumes and spur the company on with its plans to overtake BMW as the world's largest premium car manufacturer by 2015.
Unfortunately the A1 does not quite feature in the Audi's US plans as yet. Executives have said as much on a number of occasions.

Cică Mini one de 75CP ar fi un pic sub 16k euro, deci A1 la 16k devine normal

Propulsorul cel mai dorit este cel TFSI de 1.4 litri, de 120 CP. Accelerarea de la 0-100 km are loc in 9.3 secunde, iar viteza maxima este de 200 km/h. Acest propulsor este disponibil si cu transmisia automata S Tronic cu 7 rapoarte, care are ca si optiune padele pentru schimbarea treptelor de viteza. Consumul este de aproximativ 4.5-5 litri/100 km.
Propulsorul de baza este cel TFSI de 1.2 litri, de 85 CP. Accelereaza de la 0-100 km/h in 12.1 secunde, viteza maxima este de 179 km/h. Consumul este de 5.1 litri/100 km si emisii de 119 g CO2/km.
Propulsorul diesel TDI de 1.6 litri vine sub doua forme: cel de 89 CP si cel de 104 CP. Cel de 89 CP are un consum de aproximativ 3.5 litri si emisii de 99 g CO2/km, iar cel de 104 CP, are un consum aproximativ de 3.5-4 litri/100 km.
Noul Audi A1 este dotat de asemenea si cu sistemul start & stop si de un sistem de regenerare a energiei prin franare. Productia noului A1 va incepe inainte de prezentarea sa oficiala de la Geneva. Pretul de baza va fi de aproximativ 16.000 de euro pentru modelul 1.2 TFSI.
