There�s been a lot of speculation regarding a second SUV for Volvo, but we have the inside scoop! And on top of that, we have spoken to a Swedish insider involved in the project who revealed to us breaking news.

Volvo will be introducing a �concept� version of their newest utility vehicle this coming January at the NAIAS in Detroit, but the production version � to be called XC60 � won�t arrive until the second quarter of 2008 � allowing it to carry either the 2008 or 2009 model year designation. There was no misprint: though the name XC50 has been mentioned several times in the media, Volvo will be calling their new SUV the XC60 when the concept debuts in Detroit.

Codenamed Y278, the XC (Cross Country) 60 will carry over many styling features from the XC90, and will measure in slightly larger than Toyota�s new Rav4. It will share the new EUCD platform with the V70, and possibly engines from the S40 and V50, and bits and pieces with Land Rover�s Freelander, including the Haldex AWD system. Swedish? Sure. But we expect the upcoming XC60 to be built in Gent, Belgium!

Conceptul este extrem de apropiat de varianta de serie, ceva in genul Iosis-ului Wagon de la Paris, adica 90% identic cu versiunea finala. In afara de interiorul zgubilitic, oglinzi, manerele usilor si hayon-ul de sticla, restul e aproape masina de serie. Asa ca, chapeaux bas! Go, Volvo, go! :P

Asemanarea are sens, XC60 este bazat pe fratele sau aproape geaman, viitorul Iosis X de la Ford, asa ca in afara de bot, spate, anumite detalii si interior, am impresia ca vor aproape identice. Oricum, nu mai conteaza, as alege XC60 oricand, in loc de hAudi Q5, VW TIGuAN sau X3.

Take a first look at the most prescient new Volvo in years - the new XC60. This car represents the company�s first foray into the medium-sized 4x4 market; this is the �concept version� that will appear at the Detroit motor show next month.

The road-goer might be a little more toned-down in a few of its more flamboyant interior and exterior styling details. However, Volvo insiders insist that 98 per cent of what you see here will translate onto the final production version � and that�s great news for a company for which the momentum of progress had recently begun to decrease.

If the XC60 looks unlike any Volvo you�ve even seen before, that�s partly because it�s the first car to be penned entirely by new design director Steve Mattin, who is keen to embrace a radical and sporty design direction for future Volvo cars. It moves away from the angular design language established by Peter Horbury with the original S80 saloon, in the direction of a dynamic, free-flowing look likely to reappear on many new Volvo models over the next few years.

There�s no denying that the car seems to have a bold, glance-grabbing impression. Its muscular haunches may display some off-road intent, but the shallower glasshouse, low roof line and Volvo�s signature shoulderline provide a more coup�-like impression than that of a conventional 4x4.

The XC60 will be a road-biased alternative in the small premium 4x4 market currently dominated by the BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander. Between 2007 and 2009, Volvo predict that this segment will expand by 75 per cent, and hopes the bold styling of the XC60 will appeal to a young, aspiring customer who�s starting a family and has just grown out of one of their C30 hatchbacks or S40 saloons.

As always, Volvo will set new benchmarks in safety in the class. The XC60 will be installed with an active �City Safety� system, which can detect when a collision is imminent up to speeds of 20mph and brakes the car automatically to mitigate the effects of the impact.

Prices on the new Volvo are likely to start from around �22,000, undercutting the BMW X3, Mercedes� incoming GLK-class offroader and Audi�s much-rumoured Q5 by at least �3000.

And there might be even bolder designs to come from the marque. Mattin has stated that he wants to increase Volvo�s �visual volume�. If this is his starting point, we should expect some mould-breaking designs from the traditionally conservative brand over the next few years.

Noul designer sef Volvo este Steve Mattin, cel a creat cateva Merc-uri superbe, cum ar fi actualul SL si modelele precedente S-Class si SLK. Se pare ca vom vedea Volvo-uri din ce in ce mai sexy si mai indraznete de acum inainte. Abia astept sa vad daca urmasul S60-ului va fi, cum se zvoneste, un coupe cu 4 usi extrem de radical si sexy, in genul CLS-ului.

XC60 concept revealed
The people at Land Rover must be wondering who they've upset when they see these pictures of the Volvo XC60.

Officially, Volvo is calling the baby XC a concept that will be shown at the Detroit motor show, but the reality is this car will be on sale by 2009.

The XC60 looks very sharp and takes Volvo's styling to a new level, which could well tempt buyers away from Land Rover's just-on-sale Freelander 2. At least the Landie gets a couple of years' jump on the Volvo.

Not too many details about the XC60 yet, but we do know it's based on the same platform as the Freelander 2, but it's unlikely the Volvo will be offered with Terrain Response because it has few off-road pretensions.

The concept's interior shows that Volvo desperately wants to shed its conservative image, but we'll have to wait and see if more than the 'floating' centre console makes it into production. Here's hoping.

The engine line-up for the XC60 looks set to use the 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine already in the Freelander, which is a Volvo unit to begin with.

The Land Rover's 2.4-litre turbodiesel could also feature, and there are rumours of fitting the Volvo 4.4-litre V8 into the Freelander, which means it would also squeeze into the XC60.

not bad deloc.Dar ma tem ca versiunea de serie va pierde putin din "sex appeal".Oricum este un pas enorm inainte ca design pentru Volvo si din acest punct de vedere mi se pare peste concurenta.

Volvo introduced the XC60 concept last night here at the Detroit Auto Show as a way to appeal to the thirtysomething loft-dwelling crowd (drawing on the momentum of the C30, no doubt), and the Swedes also want to make a design statement in the process. "If today you can see that it's a Volvo from 50 meters, I want to make that figure twice as big" says Volvo chief designer Steve Mattin, the XC60 accomplishes this via a strongly-stated grille and slanted headlamps that will make their way onto other future Volvos. Other notable exterior features include a rear tailgate that can be lifted independently of the rear hatch (allowing the loading of small cargo with minimum hassle) and a transparent roof panel.

Inside the XC60, Volvo continues to draw from Apple's styling in the form of smooth and glossy surfaces, with the white color theme of the concept simply reinforcing the obvious relationship. Minor touches are abound to drive home the sleek and sanitary look and feel, including HVAC knobs that retract flush when the key is turned off, and window switches that appear to be based on non-mechanical capacitive sensors (much like one might find on a modern appliance or piece of exercise equipment). The vertical "ponytail slot" (Volvo's words, not ours) running through the seats is part of a new styling theme, offering ventilation, improved visibility (you just knew there had to be a safety angle), and is also said to form the basis for some sort of a cargo tie-down system.
