Workers at GM's Lordstown, OH plant just got another shot of good news from the General: the next-gen compact car from Chevrolet will be built there. The Chevy Cruze will replace the Cobalt, which recently had a third shift added to its production, and will make its initial debut at the Paris Motor Show in October. Europeans will get the first shot at the new car with sales beginning in April of 2009. The U.S. won't get the car until the following year, as the Lordstown plant begins phasing out the Cobalt and ramping up production of the Cruze in June of 2010. Both cars will be built simultaneously for a short time, according to UAW Local 1714 President Dave Green, who represents the workers at the Lordstown assembly plant.
A look at recent spy shots has our interest piqued over the new small sedan. Styling looks to be worlds better than the just decent Cobalt and the promised forty miles per gallon sounds like just what the doctor ordered in the face of ever-increasing gas prices
All-new Chevrolet Cruze coming to Paris, sales begin Spring 2009
Chevrolet has big... well... smallish plans for Paris, where the automaker will unveil an "all-new" compact vehicle dubbed the Cruze. Born from Chevy's global design and engineering team, the Cruze will sport many of the exterior elements we've seen on recent concepts, so expect lots of angular lines, a high belt-line and a squat greenhouse. The Cruze will supposedly be able to handle a parcel of five passengers, along with whatever junk they can fit in the trunk, and will measure in at 4.6 meters (181 inches) -- think of it as the next Cobalt.
After its world premier in the City of Lights this October, the Cruze will go on sale across Europe in the spring of 2009, and, according to the press release below the fold, will be available in "other global regions" afterwards.
PRESS RELEASE
Chevrolet Cruze
A new name and a new design for an all-new car
Detroit - Chevrolet announced today that its all-new entry in the compact segment will be called Cruze. The new Chevrolet will make its global debut at the Paris Motor Show in early October.
Cruze was developed by a global design and engineering team and will be built in multiple locations around the world. The Cruze approaches an overall length of 4.6 meters and offers ample interior space and cargo capacity for five passengers, giving it an advantage over competition in the compact segment.
The Cruze features Chevrolet's new global design language that will continue to be a signature element for future vehicles carrying the gold bowtie. Combined with high safety standards and excellent build quality, Chevrolet will again deliver on its promise of offering a very attractive package at an exceptional value.
The new Chevrolet Cruze will be available in European markets in Spring 2009, followed by other global regions.

General Motors has released the first details and images for its new Chevrolet Cruze, which is scheduled to make its world debut at this Octobers Paris Motor Show. Joining the recently launched Insignia sedan, the new Cruze has been developed from the ground-up as a global model and will eventually be sold in Europe, North America and Asia.
The version pictured here has been designed for the European market and will be available with two petrol engines and one diesel engine upon its launch in March next year. The petrol engines measure 1.6 and 1.8L and develop 112hp (82kW) and 140hp (103kW) respectively. Both feature variable valve timing on the inlet and exhaust sides to improve fuel economy and boost low-end performance. The oil-burner is a 2.0L turbodiesel and develops 150hp (110lW) and 320Nm of torque. A five-speed manual will be fitted as standard but a new six-automatic will also be available.
The North American version of the car will replace the current Cobalt and is set to receive its own powertrain lineup and trim options. Power for the American version is expected to come from a 1.4L turbo four-cylinder thats good for 40mpg (5.88L/100km) on the open road, and likely to get close to 30mpg (7.8L/100km) in city use. Production will be handled at GMs Lordstown assembly plant in Ohio, most likely in early 2010, with first sales to start soon after.
Built around the Delta 2 platform - the first GM vehicle to use the new architecture - the Cruze will be the forerunner of the replacements for many of GMs cars around the world including the HHR, the Cobalt and Opels Zafira.
For the Asian market the car will be badged as a Daewoo and is expected to go on sale about the same time as the North American version.
