Ferrari F70 Enzo Replacement to Receive Twin-Turbo V8

New details have emerged about Ferrari's long-rumored Enzo replacement, the F70.

Expected to be smaller, lighter, and faster than the Enzo, the F70 will have a target weight of just 1,000kg (2,204 lbs) as previewed by the 'Mille Chile' (Italian for one thousand kilos) concept of 2007. This is roughly 366kg (807 lbs) less than the Enzo, which should pay huge dividends in terms of performance and handling. To ensure this incredible weight savings is possible, Ferrari will equip the F70 with carbon fiber body panels, carbon-ceramic brakes, and a race-oriented interior.

As we have previously reported, the F70 is expected to use a twin-turbo V8 engine (like the F40). The V8 will likely produce 660 bhp (485 kW), which is identical to the output created by the Enzo's 6.0-liter V12. Backed up by a lightweight chassis, the F70 should be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.0 seconds and hit a top speed in excess of 230 mph. Despite the epic performance, the engine will be relatively fuel-efficient and offer reduced CO2 emissions.

Expected to cost 600,000 ($991,800 USD / 657,750), production will likely be limited to 399 units when it goes on "sale" (as usual, Ferrari will select who can buy the car) in 2012.

A replacement for the Ferrari Enzo is under continuous development as witnessed by these spy pictures here. The Enzo, named after the company's founder, is the pinnacle of Ferrari road performance which means its engine is at the centre of discussion. Currently a 6.0-litre V12 does its duty to the extent of 492kW (669hp).

But now a rumour claims the new car, codenamed FX70/ F70, might actually get a twin turbo V8 instead. Someone told CarsUK that Maranello is testing both V12 and V8 configurations and it seems the 8-pot is winning. Maximum power is expected to peak at around 597kW (812hp) for the V12 and 522kW (710hp) for the V8. Insider purists are arguing for the former while presumably company brass want the force-fed option.

CarsUK says its information is quite reliable as it comes from a highly trusted Ferrari customer who gets called when a significant model is developed. Apparently he was asked if he wanted an Enzo and his answer was in the affirmative. He later retorted with his own question, wanting to know whether it would be a V12 or a V8. The answer was V8. He was even told not to even consider turbo lag as it is now a thing of the past.

Details of the long rumored successor to the all conquering Ferrari Enzo have returned yet again. This time they come courtesy of a report by Autoweek that says power on the super-duper car will hit 920hp and it will be called the F70.

According to the report, the majority of the power will be generated by a 7.3-liter V12 power house that is a further development of the unit set to be employed in the F620 which will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

A total of 120 horsepower will also be derived from the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) that is better known for its employment in Formula 1 cars. One thing that must be noted is that the KERS system only gives a power boost for a limited time until the energy is regenerated meaning the Enzo replacement will spend a great deal of time with just 800 horsepower available. It seems a little low, but with a low kerb weight and driving dynamics, it could be enough.

Talking of weight, the report also states it will set the scales to around 1134kg (2,500 lbs) which is a good dip on its predecessor that comes in at 1,365 kg (3,010 lbs).

If all rumors turn out to be accurate, the new F70 will battle the successor to the McLaren F1 and the Porsche 918.

Imagine amplasata

Ferrari have kept their cards close to their chest regarding the successor to the legendary Ferrari Enzo. Rumors have been flying around the webosphere for years, however, today we finally have first spy photos of a prototype test mule taken in Germany close to a high speed secret track.

Key highlights are the flat front nose and rising rear wings which resemble the 458's, however, the vehicle is much wider. Just like a true test mule, the prototype is sporting makeshift light assemblies and perhaps many other components donated by other Ferrari models. However, we don't recall seeing these wheels before. At first glance they look like FF wheels, but they are twisted 5-spokes with the rear wheels showing an off-center split. In contrast to the original Enzo, one component not in sight, but covered by the heavy camouflage, is a rear wing.

According to a recent report by Motor Trend, the Italian supercar will use the same 6.2-liter (6262cc) V12 engine that powers the recently revealed F12 Berlinetta. However, power is set to be boosted from the base figure of 740 PS (544 kW / 730 bhp) up to a cool 800 PS (588 kW/789 hp). An additional 120 PS will also be available from the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) that has been derived from their Formula 1 race car.

The Kerb weight will be similar to the track-only Ferrari FXX with a figure of around 2550 pounds (1157kg). It will be achieved with the lightweight carbon fiber body while the chassis will be dominated by aluminum.

Codenamed the F70, the new super car has specs that should easily allow it to surpass the performance of its predecessor and engineers are reportedly aiming to exceed the all conquering Bugatti Veyron. This means we could expect to see a 0-100kph (0-62mph) time of less than 2.5 seconds and perhaps a top speed in excess of 408 kph (254mph).

Rumors suggest the F70 will be shown to select Ferrari clients later this year before a full public debut is conducted in Geneva in March 2013.

Confirmed technical details about the Ferrari F70 are now available, along with a render which could be the real thing.

The mystery of Enzo's successor is slowly starting to fade away as now we bring you complete technical and performance details about what's known internally at Maranello as the F150 but rumored to be named LaFerrari. Power comes from a V12 6262cc engine producing 800 HP (588 kW) at 9,000 rpm and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque at 6,750 rpm. It also has an electric motor with 163 HP (120 kW) and an instant torque of 270 Nm (199 lb-ft).

Thanks to this powerful setup, LaFerrari will do the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in less than three seconds on its way to a top speed of more than 217 mph (350 km/h). It needs just 15 seconds from 0 to 186 mph (300 km/h).

With the risk of repeating ourselves, the render has not been confirmed by Ferrari yet.

Model already a sales successor

The LaFerrari is proving to be a critical sales success as the company has revealed that more than 1,000 people have expressed interest in buying the bespoke supercar.

Recently unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the LaFerrari has a 6.3-liter V12 engine that develops 800 HP (588 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. It is backed up by an electric motor which contributes an additional 163 HP (120 kW) and 199 lb-ft (270 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to have a combined maximum output of 963 HP (708 kW) which allows it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in less than three seconds, 0-200 km/h (0-124 mph) in under seven seconds and 0-300 km/h (186 mph) in 15 seconds. With enough roadway available, the LaFerrari will eventually top out in excess of 350 km/h (217 mph).

Production is limited to 499 units, so a number of consumers will be denied their chance of owning the 1.3M EUR (1.11M GBP or 1.69M USD) supercar.
