We've already seen the all-new S40 saloon, but this is its station wagon counterpart - to be called V50 this time around, rather than V40. To make its debut next spring at the Geneva Motor Show, the V50 will share its powertrains with the S40 - a choice of five-cylinder petrol engines, including a 220bhp T5 turbo unit, plus the Ford 2.0-litre, 136bhp diesel. Smaller four-cylinder petrol engines will be offered later in the year.

Sharing its platform with the Ford Focus C-MAX, the Mazda3 and the upcoming all-new Ford Focus hatchback, the S40/V50 range is also expected to include a small 4x4, to be called XC50. A C-MAX-like compact MPV is rumoured, too, and the platform could even spawn a V30 hatchback. All models will feature much more upmarket interiors and equipment levels than the current S40/V40, with the cabin to include a clever 'free-floating' centre console unit which creates extra storage space. Production of the S40 starts at Volvo's factory in Ghent, Belgium, early next year, with V50 production commencing around Easter-time.
