GM to introduce five new concepts in Detroit

General Motors is building a massive exhibit for January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit. According to the Detroit News, the 120,000-square-foot display at the Cobo Center will be something of a "show-within-a-show" — with its own walls and ceilings separating it from the competition.

GM will use the exhibit to showcase five new concept vehicles, in addition to the already-announced 2008 Cadillac CTS and 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. GM is also expected to reveal other new production vehicles.

It's unclear what the five concepts will be, but there is speculation about CTS and Solstice coupes, new Zeta platform vehicles (such as the next Imapla), a Holden-based Pontiac Grand Prix, new Hummers, and more. Stay tuned…

Kia to reveal "Kue" concept in January

Kia will unveil another new crossover concept at the Detroit auto show in January. Called the Kue, the concept is the latest in a series of design studies from the Korean automaker offering a glimpse of the company's future design direction.

The midsize Kue is similar in size to a Mazda CX-9 or Saturn Outlook. At last year's Detroit show, Kia unveiled the Soul concept crossover. The Kue is somewhat less boxy, but not as voluptuous as the the HCD-9 Talus from sister company Hyundai. It appears to have some similarities to the HCD10 Hyundai Hellion Concept introduced late last month. An official unveiling will come in January.

Updated North American Ford Focus to arrive in Detroit

Ford will reveal a facelifted version of the existing Focus range at the Detroit auto show, according to SmartMoney. Ford spokesman Jim Cain, in an interview Wednesday, said the company is planning to show off the refreshed Focus for the 2008 model year at a time when "small cars are the hottest cars going."

As previously reported by Leftlane News and evidenced by our recent spy photos, Ford will also reveal a two-door coupe version of the new Focus. Both the sedan and coupe will get Ford's new signature three-bar grille. Both vehicles will also get some interesting detailing to the side panels, with a bold character line that sweeps up from the front wheel well to the' beltline, and on to the rear deck.

The Bevel Concept was created at Nissan Design America, La Jolla, Calif.

Next month, Mercedes-Benz will take the wraps off a four-door convertible based on the S class, says an industry source with knowledge of the project. The mammoth, V-12-powered convertible concept is expected to debut at the Detroit auto show.

An industry source familiar with the car says production is planned.

How big is the market for such a convertible? Erich Merkle, director of forecasting for IRN Inc. in Grand Rapids, Mich., says global volume probably would be 4,000 to 5,000 units.

Detroit show: Ford and Microsoft team up

There was a surprise remote appearance by Bill Gates at the Detroit motor show today. The Microsoft CEO was part of Ford's press conference at the Cobo Centre in Detroit, and played a part in announcing new computer software made specifically for cars by Microsoft. The new system is called Sync, has been developed in cooperation with Ford, and was fully unveiled today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Sync can link all sorts of devices � your mobile phone, MP3 player, Camera or USB storage device - into your car's electronic system via wireless technology. That will allow you to control all of those devices using your car's menu system, similarly to how you might control your Bluetooth mobile phone via buttons on your steering wheel right now. This will turn your car into a hub for all your mobile devices; via Sync, for example, you might be able to email a photo on your digital camera to a friend using your mobile phone � but all without touching either device.

Ford has exclusive rights to the system until end of 2008, according to Ford's president of the Americas, Mark Fields. It will be added to options lists during this year, first on the US model Focus and the Five-hundred (see gallery), and then on ten further Ford, Lincoln and Mercury

models.

"We're going to rollout Sync affordably and quickly and the market potential is enormous," added Fields.
