Mercedes-Benz has released details regarding its new lightweight 5.5-litre twin turbo V8 engine. The engine was speculated upon late last year and now is confirmed as reality. It will be used in certain AMG models, the first being the S 63 AMG from this summer.

The new 5.5-litre, codenamed the M157, replaces the current 6.3-litre (6208cc) naturally aspirated V8 which has been doing duty in cars like the C 63 AMG, the CLS 63 AMG, the E 63 AMG, the S 63 AMG and the CL 63 AMG.

Power is rated at 400kW (544 PS / 536 bhp) at 5,500rpm and peak torque is a massive 800Nm (590 lb-ft) made between 2,000rpm and 4,500rpm. An even more powerful version with the AMG Performance Package of the 204kg engine will produce 420kW (571 PS / 563 bhp) and 900Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque. Both will be mated to Merc's 7-speed MCT transmission which helps the less powerful model achieve 26.9mpg (UK) in average fuel consumption.

According to Autocar, a smaller 4.6-litre version of the engine, also sporting two turbos, will be used for the new CLS and S-Class derivatives later this year.

Ce interesanta e admisia, scurta cu intercooler pe apa. Excelenta solutia. Si totusi motorul asta e ca si cum si-ar recunoaste singuri greseala facuta cu 6.2.

AMG's New 5.5 Liter Biturbo V8 Engine in Depth

Mercedes AMG has pulled the lid off a new eight-cylinder engine they plan to begin using in their new vehicles beginning this summer. The engine will make its debut in the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, and will be mated to the company's new seven-speed SpeedShift MCT transmission.

The 5.5-liter biturbo direct-injection V8 petrol engine will be available in two different power settings. First, the company will sell a 544 PS (400 kW / 537 hp) version that produces up to 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque at 2000-4500 rpm. An upgraded version produces 571 PS (420 kW / 563 hp), and up to 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque at 2500-3750 rpm.

In the S63, the engine uses 10.5 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers, or roughly 22.4 mpg-US. Features in the engine include start/stop as part of a driving mode called "Controlled Efficiency." According to the company, this helped bring fuel consumption down 25 percent compared to the current S63 AMG.

Despite the greater efficiency, the new engine gets the S63 to the 100 km/h mark in 4.5 seconds, 0.1s faster than the previous model. Like the last version, the S63 AMG will also be electronically limited at 250 km/h (155 mph).

mie V8 6,2 mi s-a parut foarte reusit.
poate ca nu rupea ca putere litrica, dar mi s-a parut un motor rezistent.

Si 6.2 are MCT in versiunea de >500cp. Nu era un motor rau, doar o idee mai mare si iesit din moda actuala care cere cuplu oriunde. Uitati-va la cum are 5.5 asta curba de cuplu, e diesel toata ziua.
