When Astra is mentioned in any conversation, the first thing that comes to mind is a car that's relatively simple, but massively polular. There's no denying that this as well as the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf are both heavy, heavy contenders in the C-Segment (compact hatchback), but in its current state, the Opel always comes up short on performance, handling, build quality and comfort. Interestingly enough, each of these cars are going to be replaced within the year, and this fifth generation upcoming Astra is set to be one of the first on the road. Playing with the idea of practicality and the fun to drive factor as well as technology means that this will be a big step forward for the one-time bestseller.


On one of our most polular news pieces concerning the Opel Concept GTC, we'd mentioned that it would influience the way that the production Astra looks. Though it's true that you can see a lot of the gorgeous show car in these pictures, it isn't as low, sleek and curvy car that we had imagined it to be. However, what it does have is class and style. Large multi-beam clear headlights up front and large rear tail lights are both snatched from larger cars such as the Signum and Vectra, while the sporty looking hood and front facia give the car a look completely of it own. This is the sort of styling that we'd like to see, it's a big improvement over the current Astra's boring looks.


Under the hood, buyers can specify from eight engines: five gasolines, and three diesels. Starting out with a tiny (and probably inadequate) 90 horsepower 1.4 liter unit, the range sees other common engines, such as a 1.6 liter 100 horsepower and a 1.8 liter 125 horsepower engine. These are all great, but the star of the range, and the big surprise are the larger, more powerful engines. Opel is offering a variety of turbocharged 2.0 liter engines which give out 170 or 200 horsepower. Where'd these engines come from? Saab! In terms of oil-burning power, the Opel will feature several CDTI diesels from the old car, but will get a VW PD challenging 150 horsepower 1.9 liter diesel. Diesels get particulate filters, and the cars are hooked up to five or six speed manual (depending on power), a regular automatic, or the clutchless Easytronic transmission. Splendid.


Beneath the car's skin is a revised chassis of the one that's currently being used. Where competitors have switched to multi-links in back, the new Astra continues to ride on a semi-independent torsion beam. Though compact in size, it's not always best solution, but we'll have to see how it works out. The design of the beam itself has changed, allowing for even greater free up of space in the trunk area while reducing weight. Up front, the car sees a rather conventional strut application - it's nothing really special. A bit of a surprise is the IDS Plus electronic suspension system which judges and adjusts the stiffness of the dampers based on throttle response, steering input and on the road conditions. Look for five-door models at the IAA this September, with 3-door and wagons following.

The five-door Astra has just gone on sale in the UK, and three-door and estate models are due to follow this autumn. We caught the estate completely undisguised: note that it has a longer wheelbase than the five-door car. Looks like it'll be available in the same versions as the five-door, those alloys are the big ones off the 1.8 SRi, and it looks like it has a top-hinged, one-piece hatch, too.

Nu am mers nici cu megane 2 nici cu noul astra :D
Dar facand comparatie intre astra lui Matrix78(din 2001 parca) si noul astra. Cel putin la interior(calitatea materialelor s.a.m.d.) este aproape la fel :(
In plus cel in care m-am urcat, avea cotiera din fata cam subreda :o (eram la un expo auto)

Sau sa fi fost devina, faptul ca modelul era cel cu dotari de baza?! :D

Vreti oferta de opel astra nou de la dealer-ul din ct?

Am vazut azi o Astra pe strada si sincer mi se pare stearsa rau.

Easytronic e o cutie de viteze robotizata. Adica are niste motorase care schimba vitezele in locul tau.
