Lexus' new flagship sedan has been spied. Caught on a testing run at a filling station in Kingman, Ariz., the new LS mules reveal more about the future of the Toyota brand's big four-door.



Among the test fleet of four vehicles, there was also the current LS430, nicely parked next to the prototype of its replacement. At first sight one might not notice the difference between the two cars, but looking closer it is quite obvious. The new one on the left has bigger tires, is wider, and parts of the body look handmade. Also note the fender bulges front and rear, needed to cover the extra-wide tires mounted on large-diameter wheels. Along with the Lexus cars they had company from a BMW 7-Series and a Mercedes S-Class, which were included in the test fleet to give a direct side-by-side driving comparison of the Lexus with its top competitors.



The replacement LS sedan is expected to have a 4.6-liter V-8 engine, which would naturally result in the car being renamed as the LS460. Along with the more powerful engine will come the usual improvements to luxury, safety, and electronics that Lexus builds into each new vehicle.



Lexus will also offer a hybrid version of the LS460. The hybrid version is rumoured to be named the LS600h, and will combine Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive with a V-8 engine.



The 2007 Lexus LS460 is expected for fall 2006, and the hybrid model will likely be introduced several months later. The computer rendering above shows what the production model might look like.

Pai, stai, ca nu prea are ce sa iti placa. E doar modelul vechi sub care se ascunde platforma noului LS. Designul va fi diferit, foarte apropiat de IS.

We can�t tell you much about the next-generation Lexus LS, a model that�s expected to rewrite the rulebook on luxury motoring towards the end of next year.

But keeping secrets is not considered a worthwhile virtue in the motor industry, so here are some useful clues to be going on with.

The Lexus LF-Sh concept provides strong pointers for the styling and dimensions of the next-generation Lexus flagship LS model. Its powerful and elegant lines are a further development of Lexus�s L-finesse design language, as already witnessed in this year�s new GS and IS models.

Presenting the car, Lexus Development Centre Manager Takeshi Yoshida said: "The LF-Sh is conceived as the Lexus brand�s flagship saloon of the future and represents Lexus�s �pursuit of perfection�. It is an impressive and elegant vehicle that delivers high standards of ride quality, comfort, safety and environmental performance."

Demonstrating Lexus�s advances in advanced drivetrain technology, the LF-Sh is powered by a hybrid system combining electric motors and V8 petrol engine, driving all four wheels. This system offers exceptional acceleration, while delivering much lower emissions levels than conventional engines with similar outputs.

The concept vehicle also incorporates ground-breaking systems designed to increase accident avoidance performance.

Lexus anticipates a new LS model being ready for launch by the end of 2006.

Lexus Reveals Fourth-Generation LS 460 Flagship Sedan;
2007 LS 460 to Offer Standard- and Long-Wheelbase Models

Lexus revealed the all-new 2007 LS 460 and the company's first-ever long-wheelbase model, the LS 460L, today at a press conference at the 2006 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Seventeen years after its initial launch in Detroit, the redesigned LS now combines new levels of performance, sophistication, contemporary styling and luxury refinements.

"The Lexus LS 460 was designed to expand the definition of the full-size luxury sedan," said Jim Press, Toyota Motor Sales president and COO. "The new LS is the product of an advanced production process developed specifically for this vehicle with remarkable new levels of accuracy, refinement, precision and craftsmanship. Considering our record for quality over the last 17 years, that's quite a statement," he added.

High Output V8, World's First Eight-Speed Transmission
The LS will be powered by an all-new highly advanced 4.6-liter V8 engine that will produce approximately 380 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. Combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission, a world-first, the LS 460 will travel from zero-to-sixty miles per hour in less than 5.5 seconds. With that level of performance, the new LS will achieve an estimated combined city/highway mileage in the mid-20s. Lexus is targeting an Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle II (ULEV II) rating for the LS 460.

The new LS is built on a sophisticated platform that maintains a delicate balance between ride comfort and responsive handling. The completely redesigned multilink suspension system includes an electronic power steering system and a next-generation Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system.

VDIM is an advanced stability system that integrates and manages a new Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system, Electronic Power Steering (EPS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Antilock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and engine torque via the electronically controlled throttle.

Monitoring a variety of sensors, the system is designed to anticipate the onset of a vehicle skid or slide and then help correct the situation with a combination of braking, throttle and steering control in a way that is essentially transparent to the driver. Data is gathered from more sources and processed earlier and faster than in previous designs, helping to make VDIM less obtrusive and even more effective.

First Long-Wheelbase Sedan
At nearly 203 inches, the long-wheelbase LS 460L provides an even higher level of comfort and convenience features along with some of the most advanced technology ever offered in a production automobile. The four-passenger compartment of the LS 460L transports its rear-seat passengers in an environment whose luxury features closely resemble those of a private jet.

Luxury, Redefined by Lexus
Intelligent technology and emotionally evocative design is clearly evident throughout the beautifully appointed cabin of the new LS sedans. Extra luxury and comfort touches include a heated steering wheel and seats swathed in one of four tones of semi-aniline leathers matched to one of three coordinating wood-grain trims.

Rear occupants can relax and enjoy power reclining seats equipped with power leg rests and even a massage feature. The new LS even offers body-heat sensors that help maintain the perfect temperature for all occupants. A fold-away table matched to the interior wood grain provides ample work space for rear passengers. The LS also features a nine-inch headliner-mounted rear-screen monitor along with an all-new 19-speaker Mark Levinson� audio system that provides a true theater-level entertainment experience. Additional luxury convenience features include a power rear-door closer and an automatic-powered opening/closing trunk lid.

New Lexus Design Direction
Over the last two years, Lexus has developed a new styling philosophy that it calls L-finesse. This new design language rests upon the inherent contrast between simplicity and elegance-and the beauty of achieving a balance between the two. Simplicity, in form and function, reflects styling that is uncluttered and void of extraneous elements. Lexus elegance, inside and out, avoids exaggeration by prioritizing understated luxury that is intriguing, subtle, seamless and slightly surprising.

Lexus imbued the development of the 2006 GS and IS series sport sedans with this new styling direction. Now the LS further expands the L-finesse visual philosophy, revealing a family resemblance in the new Lexus sedans-one that conveys elegance, refinement and a strong emotional appeal.
"During the next few months, we'll provide more details about the all-new Lexus LS 460 as we prepare to launch this highly anticipated sedan," said Press. "If you like the way the LS looks, you'll be even more impressed when you hear about its advanced safety and innovative technology," he added.

The 2007 Lexus LS 460 and LS 460L are targeted for sale beginning in the fall of 2006.

The new Lexus LS luxury car was first shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in concept form � and this is the finished product.

The company had promised at the Tokyo Motor Show that the car we were looking at was 90% finished, but we couldn't see inside it, nor could we put its claim that build quality had taken a step forward to the test.

Detroit gives us the opportunity to do both. Internally, the car is nicely laid out, and there's plenty of room in the back to get comfortable, even in the standard wheelbase car.

For the first time, a long wheelbase model will be available, so you can stretch out even more while you're chauffeured around.

Build quality certainly feels impressive too, and we've no reason to doubt that this Lexus will be any less bombproof than the ones that have come before (Lexus has a very impressive display of dozens of JD Power awards on the stand too, by the way).

So what else is new?
Lexus clearly couldn't resist going one better than Mercedes, and is fitting the LS with an eight-speed automatic gearbox (yes, eight gears).

Power and performance figures aren't finalised yet, but a 4.6-litre V8 engine producing around 380bhp will rocket the LS to 60mph in less than 5.5secs � all in the best possible taste of course, of course.

The car has a hard drive which can store 4000 songs, and long-wheelbase versions come with the option of some amazing seats which recline 45 degrees, have footrests like business-class airline seats, and massage occupants.

What makes them really amazing is that, depending on the weather, these seats also warm or chill the passengers, while extra sensors help the climate control maintain the perfect cabin temperature by monitoring body as well as air temperature (don't ask where these sensors go).

To save the hassle of parking, the LS can also do it for you. Find a space, press a button and sit back as the Lexus does every last bit of it for you automatically, without kerbing those pretty alloy wheels.

We say
The rear seats on the long-wheelbase version really are a treat. We're looking forward to finding out more about some other technological and safety developments at the Geneva show in a couple of months, and about a new V8 hybrid engine at New York.
