A wake-up call for the motor industry as Euro NCAP awards two star strike-through for the new Chevrolet Aveo*

In recent years, the increasing number of cars obtaining top marks for adult occupant protection in Euro NCAP�s tests has led some to demand the introduction of a new benchmark and a sixth star.

However, results announced today by Euro NCAP prove that whilst some manufacturers are forging ahead in their safety development, others still have a long way to go.

Of the six cars tested by Euro NCAP in this recent phase, only two achieved the top five star accolade for occupant protection in Europe �s leading independent crash tests.

Claes Tingvall, Euro NCAP Chairman said,

�I am pleased to see that two of the six cars have achieved a maximum five-star rating for adult occupant protection. It is reassuring that more and more car companies are now placing an emphasis on safety and we are happy to recognise their achievements.

However, we want to encourage the highest levels of safety in all cars and, in that regard, there is still work to be done. Euro NCAP will continue to provide consumers with the best information available regarding the safety of new cars.�

The Chevrolet Aveo was singled out by Euro NCAP for the unacceptably high risk of life-threatening injury to the driver�s chest, which was highlighted by the frontal test. As a result, the car�s final star was struck through. Although the Aveo scored enough points overall to qualify for three stars, Euro NCAP insists on a minimum level of performance in each of the frontal and side impacts. While the Aveo�s performance in side impact was good, it did not score enough points in the frontal test to be given a three-star rating.

Yet, the Chevrolet was not the only car to come under Euro NCAP�s scrutiny. The Kia Cerato obtained poor results in the side impact tests with a high risk of injury to the driver�s chest.

In contrast, the Peugeot 207 joins the growing list of superminis to be awarded the five-star Euro NCAP rating in adult occupant protection, proving that even the smallest of cars can be safe on European roads.

The Alfa Romeo 159 also received impressive results for its adult occupant protection with a five-star Euro NCAP rating. This is the first Alfa Romeo to have received five stars in Euro NCAP�s adult occupant protection test. More worrying were the Alfa Romeo�s pedestrian protection results: only a one-star rating.

Claes Tingvall, Euro NCAP Chairman said,

�I am pleased to see that Alfa Romeo achieved the coveted five-star Euro NCAP rating for adult occupant protection, yet I am disappointed that they have not shown the same commitment to pedestrian protection. There is a clear difference emerging between those car manufacturers who are trying to improve the protection their cars offer to pedestrians and those who still see that as a low priority. When cars can achieve creditable results without any advanced technology, there is no excuse for the very low levels of performance we have seen in this phase. There is no reason why cars cannot now provide a high level of protection to all road users.�

*The Chevrolet Aveo is a face lifted version of the Chevrolet/Daewoo Kalos. We were advised that the Kalos would be replaced by the Aveo, but now understand that the Kalos will continue to be available as a three/five door version until 2008. Until then we are informed that the Aveo will only be available as a saloon.

It has been indicated that the facelift includes improvements in safety and Euro NCAP can only conclude that the safety performance of the Kalos will not be as good as the Aveo. In any case, as our assessment was made on a saloon car, we can not be sure that the three/five door car will have the same performance.

Nu ma mira rezultatul revoltator obtinut de un SUV chinezesc... insa, Aveo e un produs al gigantului GM, o versiune imbunatatita a lui Kalos, deci ar fi trebuit sa fie destul de sigur. Structural deformation and spot-weld release indicated that the bodyshell had been overloaded and had become unstable.
Rearward movement of the A-pillar was penalised. Movement of the steering-wheel presented a hazard to the driver's
head. The driver's chest made contact with the steering-wheel, distorting the rim. Compression of the driver's chest
indicated an unacceptably high risk of life-threatening injury. As a result, the final star of the adult occupant rating is struck
through. Structures in the dashboard represented a potential hazard to the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger.
No points were awarded for the protection offered to the feet and ankles.

Eu nu pot sa inteleg cum Matiz 1 a obtinut 3 stele la EuroNCAP acum cativa ani si Aveo, generatie 2005, sta mai prost la capitolul siguranta decat un mini din 1998. http://www.garajul.r...tyle_emoticons/default/010.gif

Aia cu Aveo cred ca are altceva la mijloc... Nu de alta dar fix aceeasi masina a luat 4 stele la americani...

@VIPER asta semnalam si eu mai demult in thread-ul de stiri...e ceva dubios la mijloc....e clar ca unii mint problema e care....daca mint europenii e bine deoarece masina e sigura (si cred ca asa este si a fost o miscare pt a proteja piata europeana, fiin cunoscut faptul ca , constructorii europeni se tem de asiatici), daca americanii dezinformeaza atunci nu e bine...inseamana ca si loganul e mai sigur.

Americanii au alte standarde de impact. Nu stiu daca minte cineva, doar ca masina nu e facuta sa ia 5 stele la EuroNCAP, ceea ce nu inseamna ca este neaparat un coparseu pe roti.

Pai Aveo parca are 2 stele acuma si Kalos are 3 ... Cam dubios...

Da, e un pic dubios, dar nu sunt sigur ca cei de la EuroNCAP mint, De ce ar face-o. Poate ca masina chiar e mai proasta din punctul de vedere al sigurantei. Si, oricum, normele de testare si parametrii au devenit mai drastice in ultima vreme, Kalos fiind testat mai demult.

Presedintele EuroNCAP, despre semiesecurile Honda Civic si Audi Q7

Intr-un comunicat de presa difuzat de catre organismul european specializat in testarea sigurantei automobilelor, EuroNCAP, se precizeaza ca patru dintre modelele testare recent au primit punctajul maxim de 5 stele pentru protectia pasagerilor adulti: Ford Galaxy, Mercedes-Benz Clasa B, Lexus IS si Citroen C4 Picasso.

Toate celelalte modele testate, inclusiv Honda Civic si Audi Q7, au primit 4 stele.

Dincolo de rezultatele seci ale testelor, cei de la EuroNCAP fac si cateva comentarii, deloc lipsite de interes. Masinile cu punctajul maxim au fost laudate de catre presedintele EuroNCAP, Claes Tingvall: �Acesti producatori cred in necesitatea asigurarii celor mai inalte standarde de siguranta pentru clientii lor si este bine ca ei sunt rasplatiti constant cu maximum de puncte.�

Noua generatie Civic, un automobil bine primit peste tot in lume, n-a impresionat si la crash-teste. Desi Honda se astepta sa obtina 5 stele, testele EuroNCAP au aratat ca aceasta noua generatie nu poate primi mai mult de 4 stele. Claes Tingvall, despre acest rezultat: �Este o dezamagire, desi nu surprinde ca unii producatori isi anunta asteptarile.

Cei de la Honda au afirmat pe site-ul propriu de internet ca se asteptau la 5 stele pentru Civic si continua sa lase aceasta informatie chiar si dupa ce am publicat rezultatele, lucru ce induce publicul in eroare. Honda inca nu a produs o masina de 5 stele si ar trebui sa astepte publicarea rezultatelor testelor inainte de a sugera alte rezultate�.

Un alt model cu mari asteptari... neimplinite la testele EuroNCAP este SUV-ul Audi Q7. La testul impactului frontal, zona picioarelor manechinului a avut de suferit. Audi sustine ca au imbunatatit calitatea productiei, ca urmare a rezultatelor obtinute la testele EuroNCAP, dar s-a hotarat sa nu trimita masina pentru retestare.

Claes Tingvall, spune ca �Audi Q7 este o masina scumpa, prestigioasa apartinand unei marci recunoscute pentru calitatea produselor ei. Cei care au cumparat-o vor fi dezamagiti ca nu a fost cotata mai bine decat masini mai vechi si mai ieftine, care au obtinut acelasi punctaj. Cei ce platesc un pret premium pentru o masina se asteapta la maximum de protectie.�

NEW TOYOTA AURIS ACHIEVES FIVE-STARS FROM EURO NCAP

� New Auris hatchback awarded 35 points (5 stars)

� Minimal intrusion cabin design and up to nine airbags boost safety rating

� 4-star performance for child occupant protection

� Driver�s knee airbag as standard

� Auris is the fifth Toyota to achieve a 5-star result

The new Toyota Auris has been awarded a best possible 5-star crash safety rating from Euro NCAP.

The strong body structure, which allows minimal cabin intrusion, and the fitment of up to nine airbags add up to outstanding passenger safety. In particular, the combination of a driver knee airbag and a collapsible steering column led to the 35 point, 5-star result for adult occupant protection.

A key benefit to Auris customers with young children are the standard ISOFIX anchorage points on the outer rear seats. These helped gain a four-star rating for child occupant protection. Euro NCAP also awarded the Toyota Auris a class-leading three out of four-star rating for pedestrian protection.

Auris also recorded top results in the side impact and pole impact tests, plus an overall 94 per cent score in the frontal impact test.

Andrea Formica, Senior Vice-President, Sales & Marketing & After Sales, Toyota Motor Europe: �We have always sought to ensure that every new Toyota enjoys the highest levels of safety.

�We are very confident that the new Auris will impress customers with its safety performance combined with the distinctive design and engaging driving dynamics.�

The detailed Euro NCAP results show that the Toyota Auris scored 35 points for passenger protection (maximum: 37 points), 37 points for child protection (max: 48 points) and 21 points for pedestrian protection (max. 27). With this result, the Toyota Auris qualifies amongst the safest vehicles in its segment.

The new Toyota Auris is on sale in the UK from 1 February, 2007.

In afara de Auris, la clasa compacta, a mai luat vreodata o masina 12 stele ( 5+3+4)? Toyota va exploata bine acest rezultat si, combinat cu "mitul japonez", va vinde multe masinutze...

CIteste si o sa intelegi. 5 stele la impact + 4 stele pt. copii + 3 stele pentru pietoni insumeaza un rezultat de exceptie.

Au mai obtinut 12 stele cumulate numai Citroen C4 si VW Golf in 2004.
