Instead of risking third-degree burns by building a dirty great bonfire, the Greens are creating a 20-foot effigy of our very own Jeremy Clarkson.
And they're inviting recyclers from far and wide to join them in hurling their aluminium cans at the gigantic figurine. That'll teach him for, in their words, 'driving round for fun'. Shame on you, JC.
It all sounds terrifyingly Wicker Man, but we're intrigued to see whether East Anglia's eco-warriors can throw as tough as they talk.
So if anyone's in the Norwich area this Sunday night with a digital camera, we'd love to see a couple of photos of the action.
Don't forget your tin cans though.

Chery Automobiles to supply Fiat with 1.6 & 1.8lt engines!
Could this be the end of the "Italian" world as we knew it? Well we'd better get used to the idea as Fiat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chinese car company, Chery.
According to this agreement, Chery Automobile will supply more than 100,000 1.6 and 1.8 lt gasoline engines for application in Fiat cars to be produced in China and... most importantly, outside China -though they didn't say which markets will receive the Chinese made engines (lets hope, not engineered). The two companies are engaged to sign the definitive supply agreement before year end.
PS: When Fiat's CEO, Sergio Marchionne says that he sees "the potential for a wider cooperation both in powertrains and, eventually, in other automotive sectors", i hope he doesn't mean something like this: GreatWall Panda

Top Gear has won the most polular factual programme prize at this year's National Television Awards - beating off competition from Sir David Attenborough's big-budget Planet Earth along the way.
Jeremy, who collected the award with co-presenter James May and series producer Andy Wilman, dedicated the award to Richard Hammond. "This will cheer him up and the whole Top Gear team," said Jeremy. "They have had a pretty torrid time over the last few weeks."
Jeremy said that Hammond, who is recovering at home, was completely fixed but had been advised not to go out in front of the flashbulbs. "I got a text from Hamster earlier," said Jeremy. "He said break a leg - in fact I hope he breaks both legs. He's completely delighted."
And Jeremy revealed that Hammond may have been the key to the programme's award success. "I told you if one of us had a car accident we'd win this," he said.
In fact, it's been a good few weeks for the TG awards cabinet - TopGear.com recently picked up the award for consumer website of the year from the Association of Online Publishers, seeing off challenges from the Guardian online, the NME, BBC Radio 1 and the Wall Street Journal.

Swedish automaker Volvo is developing a twin-clutch gearbox to compete with offerings from Volkswagen, company officials reportedly told WhatCar? magazine. The technology will also be shared with parent company Ford, according to the report.
The transmission will be similar to the Direct Shift Gearbox from VW, which uses two computer-controlled clutches to offer extremely quick shifts. The technology is generally regarded as superior to an SMG-style automated manual with just one clutch, because shifts are much smoother during casual driving.
Twin-clutch transmissions are also comparable to regular manual transmissions in terms of fuel economy. BMW is said to be developing a dual-clutch gearbox to replace its SMG system, and Porsche is working on one to replace its Tiptronic automatic system. Chrysler is also rumored to have a DSG rival under development.

Up to 30 buyers are reported to be interested in buying Aston Martin from Ford, and none of them are other automakers. According to the U.K.'s Guardian Unlimited, a bidding war could push the price of the company over �1 billion ($1.9 billion).
Interested buyers are required to submit their initial bids by the end of the month, according to the report. The list of interested parties is made up of private equity firms and wealthy individuals, the newspaper said.
So far, no automaker has come forward to express an interest in Aston. BMW recently said it has no desire to acquire the company. Analysts have also said a Japanese buyout of Aston Martin is unlikely. Accordingly, it looks like Aston Martin might become and independent organization � a rare arrangement in the automotive world these days.

Top Audi officials have reportedly told Germany's WirtschaftsWoche magazine that development of a MINI competitor has been approved. Believed to be called the A1, the new car is based on the A000 architecture.
Previous reports indicated Audi was having a hard time sourcing a platform for the A1. It now appears the car is being developed in conjunction with sister company SEAT. Audi is also rumored to be working with SEAT on a new mid-engine platform, which will be used for the Audi R4 � a Porsche Boxster competitor.
Previous reports have indicated the A1 will arrive as a 2009 or 2010 model. Rumor has it the car will show up at IAA 2009 in Frankfurt. A 240 horsepower model will be positioned against the Mini Cooper.

Volkswagen's Bernd Pischetsrieder will step down as CEO of the automaker at the end of the year, the company announced today. "The presidium of the supervisory board of Volkswagen AG and the chairman of the board of management, Dr. Bernd Pischetsrieder, have agreed upon his resignation effective from December 31, 2006," the company said in a surprise announcement.
Volkswagen did not say why Pischetsrieder would depart the company. The news comes six months after the company's board unanimously voted to extend his contract until 2012.
Audi's current chief executive Martin Winterkorn will replace Pischetsrieder for 2007. VW told Reuters Pischetsrieder would be offered a new role within the organization.
Subaru to expand STI range?
Subaru is considering building STI versions of more vehicles in its model lineup, according to Tomohiro Ishitobi, Subaru vice president of product planning. In an interview with AutoWeek, Ishitobi said "We are discussing it internally" and "We feel the market is ready."
At the SEMA car customization expo, Subaru unveiled the Forester Sports 2.5 XT concept, which could eventually lead to a production STI-spec Forester. The automaker is also believed to be considering offering a STI edition Legacy in various markets. Currently, and STI package is available for the Legacy in Japan only, but it is limited production and quite pricey. Ishitobi said enthusiasts often express an interested in a Legacy STI. He said it's on the company's "wish list."

La acest pret, 206 Sedan va avea ca echipare standard geamuri electrice fata, airbag pentru sofer si pasager, aer conditionat, proiectoare de ceata si inchidere centralizata. Peugeot 206 Sedan va trebui sa castige un sector de piata foarte dificil, principalii sai adversari fiind Fiat Albea si Dacia Logan. Oficialii Peugeot au estimat o cifra de vanzari de 400 unitati pe luna.
Complexul BlueBox inaugurat de Peugeot in Pantelimon este cel mai mare din tara. Constructia se intinde pe o suprafata de 4100 mp si a fost realizata in decursul a 12 luni cu o investitie de 7 milioane euro.
Complexul cuprinde un showroom, un service (cu o suprafata de 2500 mp), spatii destinate expunerii autovehiculelor de ocazie, spatii destinate comercializarii de piese de schimb si o zona de asteptare dotata cu acces internet, cafe-bar si magazin cu obiecte promotionale. In cadrul complexului operatiunile de service sunt realizate cu ajutorul programelor Peugeot Rapide si Peugeot Assistance.

Performanta este remarcabila, daca se are in vedere faptul ca marca Mercedes-Benz este pentru prima oara reprezentata in acest segment, in mare parte dominat de rivalii sai americani. Echipa editoriala de la Motor Trend, formata din 22 de specialisti, a luat in calcul toate modelele lansate in ultimul an. Pe langa testele realizate pe autostrazi, in poligon si off-road, criteriile de evaluarea au inclus si functionalitatea, calitatea fabricarii, spatiul disponibil si nivelul de echipare. Inovatiile tehnice, precum trenul de rulare, siguranta activa si pasiva, designul au fost si ele evaluate. Un alt criteriu important in evaluare a fost raportul calitate-pret, important in special pentru clientii americani.

A British legend is preparing to head to the Bon�neville Salt Flats in the US to set a new performance record.

Auto Express has learned that Rolls-Royce has its sights set on the 409mph Landspeed Record for piston-engined, wheel-driven cars. And while RR's German bosses at BMW would never normally give the go-ahead for the firm to take part in conventional motorsport activity, it has agreed that a Bonneville attempt is in keeping with the brand's image.
Rolls-Royce has a long association with landspeed record bids, most notably with Sir Malcolm Campbell's Bluebird machines in the Thirties. The spectacular streamliners were responsible for nearly every major speed record, and until the advent of the jet engine were the fastest cars on the planet. For this new attempt, the company has a turbocharged V16 engine capable of delivering in excess of 1,000bhp.
Interest in record breaking at Bon�neville, Utah, has enjoyed a surge in polularity in recent years, thanks to Richard Noble and Andy Green's exploits, first with Thrust SSC and more recently with the JCB Diesel�max. The tractor firm is also looking at returning to the salt flats next year. But there are big challenges to the targets now being set - not least because of the tyres. As both cars will have driven wheels, they must use pneumatic tyres to provide traction, rather than Thrust SCC's aluminium. At very high speeds, pressures on the tyres are enormous.
More news on Rolls-Royce's efforts is expected at January's Detroit Motor Show, where the new Corniche convertible is set to make its debut.

To show off the towing capabilities of the 5.0-litre V10 diesel Touareg, VW decided it would be a good idea to hitch it up to a 155-tonne Boeing 747. We tried it, and it went without a hitch (other than the one connecting the car to the plane, but you get the idea).
It's simple � all we had to do was get in, select low-ratio, put it in second gear and feather the throttle. At around 1500rpm, with no wheel-spinning and very little drama, the whole thing started to move. Once going, it was only the faintly alarming sight of the Jumbo's massive nosewheels in the rear-view mirror that reminded us we weren't towing any ordinary load. And with no brakes on the Jumbo, you stop simply by coming off the throttle, but you�d be amazed at how much momentum there is.
The aeroplane was a disused Boeing 747-200. The eagle-eyed may notice that its engines look a bit different - that's because they're fake, the jumbo having been used as a film prop. But VW added extra ballast to take the 747 up to its normal operational weight of 155 tonnes. Other than the odd engines, the Boeing was all real - right down to the 500 seats on board.
The Touareg was also production-spec, though it too had a bit of ballast added. Around 4.3 tonnes, in fact. That wasn't all our driver, either� The ballast � steel plates under the front and bags of steel pellets throughout the interior of the car � helps prevent the Touareg from pulling a wheelie down the runway. It also takes the total weight of the car, including driver, to around 7030kg.
Amazingly, the Touareg's air suspension and wheels are standard. The tyres are also standard, though inflated to around twice their normal pressure at 65psi. In fact, the only modification to the car is that its axle ratio is from the V8 petrol model, rather than the V10's standard item. Even the towing connector was a standard US-spec item. And the engine (all 5.0 litres, 309bhp and 553lb ft of it) was also unchanged.
So there you have it � if you need to move a Jumbo Jet, get a Touraeg. But next time we think we'll leave it to the pilot.

Not only will Mazda's new 3 MPS be one of the most powerful hot hatches when it arrives in February - it'll also be one of the cheapest.
Mazda says that the new MPS will cost from �18,995 - less than both the Vauxhall Astra VXR and Golf GTi, and just �600 more than the Ford Focus ST five-door.
The MPS comes with a 256bhp 2.3-litre turbocharged engine, which should propel it to 60mph in under six seconds - if the front tyres can handle it.
It also comes with plenty of standard kit, including a Bose stereo system with CD changer, xenon headlights and heated seats.
Mazda reckons buyers will go for the MPS's Q-car looks - it's pretty subtle - but in case they don't, a �500 bodykit will be available later next year.

Safety experts at Mercedes-Benz are turning their attentions to one of the principal causes of serious traffic accidents: over-fatigue. The objective of their work is to develop a system that is capable of recognising fatigue in time to warn the driver. Over the course of this development project, the engineers from the Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre have already conducted tests with over 200 motorists, both in the driving simulator and on motorways. The revolutionary new system should be ready for series production in just a few years' time.
According to official statistics in Germany, around 0.5 per cent of all serious traffic accidents are caused by "over-fatigue". Last year, the police put a total of 3034 accidents down to fatigue, including 1786 collisions resulting in personal injury. This equates to some 0.5 per cent of all serious accidents. Experts believe that the true figure is much higher, however, as it is often impossible to detect and verify signs of fatigue by the time accidents are reconstructed. Various scientific studies estimate that between 10 and 20 per cent of serious traffic accidents can be attributed to drowsiness. According to an investigation carried out by insurance companies in Germany, fatigue is responsible for one in four fatal motorway accidents. The probability of being killed in an accident resulting from fatigue is 2.5 times higher than for all other causes of accidents.
These findings are corroborated by accident researchers outside Germany. The American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that every year over 100,000 accidents are caused by driver fatigue in the US, in which 1500 people are killed and a further 71,000 injured. The NHTSA claims that the risk of an accident or a near-accident occurring increases four to six-fold if driving when tired. Meanwhile, a study into fatigue at the wheel conducted by scientists in Canada established that one in five drivers has at some time nodded off whilst driving.
Two thirds of fatigue-induced accidents occur at night-time, with one in two taking place in light traffic. The majority of incidents of this type happen in the early hours of the morning between 2 and 6 a.m., but they can also occur in the middle of the afternoon.
Mercedes assistance systems honed for real-life accident scenarios
When developing driver assistance systems, Mercedes-Benz works at all times on the basis of what happens in real-life accidents and deploys the very latest technology in its ongoing search for new ways of improving driving safety in critical situations. In the past, the Stuttgart automotive brand has focused on particularly serious accidents resulting from driver errors, rear-end collisions, accidents at night-time and accidents involving pedestrians. This has enabled Mercedes-Benz engineers to obtain remarkable results, as confirmed by the accident statistics:
Fitting the Electronic Stability Program (ESP�) as standard has brought about a reduction of over 42 per cent in the proportion of serious accidents resulting from driver errors in the accident breakdown for Mercedes passenger cars.
Brake Assist (BAS), that was likewise invented by Mercedes-Benz and has featured as standard in its passenger cars since 1997, helped to cut the rate of rear-end collisions (per 10,000 new vehicle registrations) by eight per cent for Mercedes passenger cars. At the same time, BAS has reduced the proportion of serious pedestrian accidents by 13 per cent.
The latest project for detecting fatigue at the wheel has yet again seen the experts at Mercedes apply their committed, practically minded approach to avoiding acci-dents. Development of this brand new system got underway several years ago with a series of tests in the driving simulator in Berlin. This was followed by a programme of motorway driving at night-time which 150 test persons have participated in to date, covering over 250,000 kilometres in the process.
Different fatigue detection techniques undergoing trials
Over the course of the practical investigations, the expert team of engineers, cyberneticists, mathematicians, computer scientists and psychologists is testing out a variety of methods for detecting driver fatigue as soon as it sets in. One of these techniques is the eye-blink observation method: an infrared camera directed at the driver's head permanently monitors the eye-blink frequency, enabling microsleep to be detected the instant the eyes stay closed for a certain period of time. A warning signal sounds in the car's cockpit in response.
In order to obtain objective indicators of fatigue, other physiological readings such as the electroencephalogram (EEG) are used. Yet another method is based on the analysis of dynamic driving data, such as steering or braking characteristics. One of the systems triggers an alarm if the driver does not move the steering wheel for a prolonged period of time.
Detecting fatigue by combining measured and empirical values
However, initial results obtained by the engineers in Sindelfingen indicate that the observation of individual criteria alone does not allow reliable detection of tiredness. Fatigue is a highly complex phenomenon that can manifest itself in all manner of ways. In view of this, Mercedes-Benz will make use of a whole host of factors for fatigue detection, including the individual driving style, the duration of the journey, the time of day and the current traffic situation. By continually comparing this data with stored empirical values, the system will be able to compile an individual driver profile and use probability calculus to determine whether the driver is exhibiting the first signs of fatigue.
The principal goal of the development project is to detect the gradual transition from the state of being fully awake to being tired, in other words from high powers of concentration to a clear attention lapse, and warn the driver before he or she becomes over-fatigued and thereby jeopardises safety.

Microsleep: a dangerous symptom of over-fatigue
Fatigue is a natural reaction of the body but, nevertheless, a hazardous one as many motorists are oblivious to its onset. They are exhausted and need to sleep but they continue driving - running a tremendous risk in the process.
The phenomenon that threatens to occur in this type of situation is referred to by experts as "microsleep": a spontaneous reaction of the human organism to over-fatigue. The eyes sting, the lids blink more frequently but more slowly too, the pupils become smaller, the driver yawns and shivers - all telltale warning signs of this phenomenon. Should the eyes remain closed for just one second longer than usual the consequences can be fatal, as in this second the car covers a whole 28 metres when travelling at a speed of 100 km/h - effectively driverless and therefore out of control.
Microsleep with the eyes still open, which is also regularly observed by scientists during their investigations, is no less perilous. In this state, the brain processes what the eyes see very slowly or not at all, greatly lengthening the reaction times.
Darkness, monotony and overstrain are the most frequent triggers of microsleep at the wheel. A survey of drivers in Canada revealed that 27 per cent regularly drove between four and six hours on long journeys without a break. Investigations have shown, however, that drivers can react up to 50 per cent more slowly after just four hours of non-stop driving. The accident risk doubles after driving for this length of time and increases by more than eight fold after six hours behind the wheel.
Not only do tired motorists react more slowly and misjudge hazardous situations, they also overestimate their own capabilities and feel more alert than they actually are - characteristic symptoms of fatigue which are similar to those observed after excessive consumption of alcohol.
People suffering from chronic sleep disorders particularly at risk
A dangerous onset of fatigue whilst driving can also be provoked by a lack of sleep. Studies indicate that at least 20 per cent of Europeans suffer from sleep disorders during the night. Of the motorists who admitted to nodding off at the wheel in the Canadian survey, more than one in four slept less than six hours a night.
People who suffer from sleep apnoea syndrome are particularly affected. This condition causes sufferers to briefly stop breathing many times during the night and wake up with a start, meaning that they hardly ever reach the relaxing phases of deep sleep. Consequently, they feel tired during the day, they have trouble concentrating and tend to fall asleep - microsleep is tantamount to a self-defence mechanism triggered by the body in response to sleep disorders or lack of sleep during the night. An investigation conducted by scientists at the University of the Ruhr in Bochum concluded that the accident risk whilst driving is two to three times higher for people suffering from sleep apnoea. During tests in a driving simulator, they caused "significantly more accidents" and suffered from "far more lapses of concentration which could potentially lead to an accident".
It is estimated that over 800,000 people are affected by sleep apnoea syndrome in Germany alone.
Greatest accident risk in the early hours of the morning and around midday
The majority of road accidents caused by over-fatigue occur in the early hours of the morning between 2 and 6 a.m. as well as in the afternoon, according to studies carried out by insurance companies in Germany and the Swiss Advisory Agency for Accident Prevention. As well as fatigue, this fact can also be attributed to our biorhythms, as the human body is programmed for sleep and recuperation at these times. Human performance levels drop rapidly after 10 p.m., reaching their lowest point between 3 and 4 a.m. Performance levels do not return to their maximum until the morning, which is the best time of day for long journeys.
The findings of traffic researchers indicate that many motorists are actually capable of recognising when they are tired, but by then it is often too late. Fatigue does not generally set in suddenly, rather it builds up over a certain period of time. During this time, reactions and powers of perception deteriorate continuously and to such a pronounced degree that the driver's ability to take the correct action may be compromised even in the early stages of fatigue. The driver assistance system being designed by Mercedes-Benz for automatically detecting the first signs of fatigue and warning the driver accordingly can therefore make a vital contribution to improving safety on our roads.
If drivers suddenly feel tired, there is only one solution: take a break. Drinking coffee, cola or energy drinks only serves to boost concentration levels briefly and can often leave drivers feeling even more fatigued when the effect wears off. A brisk walk in the fresh air, on the other hand, can often be far more beneficial. However, when it comes to combating fatigue as effectively as possible, nothing can beat a good sleep.
New Engine for Mercedes CLK200 Kompressor
The Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Coupe and Cabriolet range is enhanced with the introduction of a new CLK 200 KOMPRESSOR engine.
Available in both Coupe and Cabriolet models the four-cylinder engine delivers 184 hp and generates a maximum of 250 Nm of torque, offering greater power output, (+21 hp) and improved torque (+10 Nm) compared to its predecessor, while maintaining the same fuel economy and all important CO2 emissions.
Driving pleasure and dynamic performance are further improved with an increased top speed of 147 mph for the Coupe fitted with a manual gearbox, and acceleration from 0-62 mph in just 8.8 seconds (previous model: 9.3 seconds).
Despite the increased power, prices remain the same for the CLK 200 Kompressor.

DETROIT, Nov 8, 2006; Reuters reported that General Motors Corp. will likely launch a new Hummer truck in 2009, the head of the niche brand told Reuters on Wednesday.
"The new product will have unparalleled off-road capabilities," Hummer General Manager Martin Walsh said. "Like our current Hummers it would be recognizable from a distance."
The brand currently has two models: the H2 and H3. It stopped production of the H1 in June.
Earlier this year, GM's activist investor Kirk Kerkorian urged the automaker to consider spinning off Hummer, which began as a high-mobility vehicle for the U.S. military.
But GM executives have argued Hummer is key to its strategy as it tries to recover from a $10.6 billion 2005 loss, reverse a market share slide and return to profit in the U.S. market.
Global Hummer sales rose 54 percent in the first nine months of 2006, when overall GM sales fell 2.5 percent.
Walsh said the brand is "very successful" because 60 percent of Hummer buyers have never owned a GM vehicle before. "We bring them in from other brands, and then they stick within the GM family when picking their next vehicle," he said.
Hummer typically targets affluent people in their 40s. The median age for an H3 buyer is 44, and 43 for an H2 owner. The average household income for H3 owners is nearly $128,000 while the average H2 buyer's household earns close to $170,000. GM product chief Bob Lutz said earlier this year Hummer needs to add two or three more models.
OVERSEAS GROWTH
Hummer last month started producing H3s at a plant in South Africa, which will serve all markets outside North America.
Walsh said Hummer plans to launch the H3 in Australia and South Africa next year, and expects solid growth in Western European markets such as the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain over the next year.
Even as GM's sales of sport utility vehicles were hurt amid high gas prices earlier this year, Hummer sales remained strong through those months.
And despite the possibility of another rise in gas prices, Walsh said he does not see an immediate future for a hybrid version of any Hummer product.
"We don't really see hybrid technology as an ideal platform for Hummer because it does not allow the vehicle to demonstrate true off-road capabilities," Walsh said.
Yet he did say making flex-fuel capable Hummers, so they can run on gasoline or ethanol and gasoline blends, is part of the brand's future plans.

Oficialii de la Volkswagen au declarat că intenţionează producerea unei maşini din clasa SUV de dimensiuni similare cu cele ale modelului Toyota Land Cruiser. Astfel de modele sunt foarte căutate �n America, dar o creştere pronunţată se simte şi pe piaţa Europei de Est. Cel mai mare grup auto nu va trebui să investească �ntr-o nouă linie de producţie pentru acest SUV, ci va apela la o platformă deja existentă. SUV-ul va �mpărţi platforma cu un pick-up, numit doar "Robust", care va fi produs �n Argentina, �ncep�nd cu 2009. SUV-ul va avea cel mai probabil şapte locuri, iar Volkswagen preconizează o producţie anuală de aproximativ 40.000 de vehicule. Pick-up-ul este dezvoltat �n prezent de Divizia de Vehicule Comerciale a germanilor şi este g�ndit cu cabina pentru două şi pentru patru persoane. Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking is using his company's large stake in Volkswagen to pressure the company into changing plans for its Bugatti brand, according to the latest issue of Britain's CAR magazine.
As widely reported in the automotive press, the automaker loses money on every $1.3 million Veyron it sells. With the Veyron program not expected to turn a profit any time soon, rumors began circulating about a possible entry-level Bugatti roadster, and possibly even a more modestly priced sedan.
Unfortunately, sister brands Lamborghini and Bentley are strongly opposed to VW allowing Bugatti to enter their territory. What's more, Porsche has concerns of its own about Bugatti moving downmarket.
Accordingly, Porsche has suggested VW transform Bugatti into a coachbuilding business, creating one-off $4,000,000 super cars. While it's unclear if the company will go that far, there is mounting pressure both to achieve profitability, and not step on any toes.

After 6 years and 639,000 units, the last Nissan Almera will roll off the production line at Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd (NMUK) in Sunderland today.
Launched in January 2000, Almera production created 800 new jobs at the Sunderland plant and NMUK became a three model plant. In the first year of production, more than 115,000 units were built and over its lifetime, the Almera has been exported to more than 45 countries around the world.
Vice President of Manufacturing at NMUK Trevor Mann commented: �Since its launch, the Almera has been very important in supporting Nissan�s sales targets right across Europe and further afield, most recently in Russia where it has proved extremely polular.
�However, Nissan is now pursuing a new product strategy in Europe by offering the customer more unique, individual models that aren't limited by the traditional market segments. This smallest Audi will no doubt come equipped with a fabulous interior, the Twincharger engine range, and possibly diesel motivation as well. All 10,000 of the 2009 inagural run will be produced in Brussels, Belgium. Now that Audi and the Belgian unions have figured things out, we will bide our time waiting to get our hands on the Lilliputian from Ingolstadt.

Lexus will launch a new high-performance lineup beginning in 2007, according to dealer sources cited by Automotive News. The series will compete with BMW's "M" line and Mercedes' AMG. The automaker has filed for a trademark on the name "IS-F," which is believed to be the name for the company's 425 horsepower IS sedan, previously referred to as the IS 500.
The IS-F will be unveiled in January at the Detroit auto show and go on sale in December 2007. Other "F" models will surely be added in the following months, including a GS-F and an IS-F coupe.
The company also filed for a trademark on a new "F" logo (pictured). The logo features a stylized letter similar to that of the Lexus logo.

Samuel L. Jackson rollin' in a Maybach of his own
Samuel L. Jackson and the Maybach 57SActor Samuel L. Jackson, whose extensive resume includes gigs as both Shaft and a Jedi Master (honestly, it doesn't get much cooler than that), was in Germany recently for the Bambi Awards, and while he was in country, he stopped by the Mercedes Museum for a tour and took a little extra time out with his wife, La Tanya, to order up a new Maybach.
Jackson appears to be a bit of a Mercedes guy, as he currently owns a new S-Class sedan and a vintage 280 SE convertible. They'll soon be joined in the garage by a 600+ hp Maybach 57S in Designo Mocca Black lacquer finish. According to Autokiste, he and his wife selected light beige leather with darker beige piping, light wood trim, and a roof-mounted solar panel (among other things) as they went through the car's extensive list of options.
The solar panel allows the car to cool itself when parked with the engine off. Frankly, we're surprised at that option selection, as we thought Samuel L Jackson's inherent coolness would obviate the need for such measures.

29th October 2006: Today, DaimlerChrysler Group opens its biggest-ever brand experience centre site, adjacent to the world's oldest purpose built racing circuit in Weybridge, Surrey. Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands is yet another significant first' from the inventor of the automobile, and it becomes the largest automotive development of its kind in the UK.
DaimlerChrysler has already opened five similar brand experience centres across the world as part of its global strategy to bring its brand closer to consumers, but Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands is by far its largest to date and is unique in two ways. Its intrinsic historical links with the site on which it stands (Mercedes won on the opening race day at Brooklands in 1907), and the hands-on driving experiences that will be available on the 2.5km handling circuit and the 10 acre off road terrain course. To date, this is the most complete experience centre for the Mercedes-Benz brand and is the first of its type amongst automotive manufacturers in the UK.
Centrepiece to the Mercedes-Benz World development is an impressive three-storey 16,650m2 building which houses an experiential and interactive world which immerses visitors in the passion, heritage, values and innovation of the Mercedes-Benz brand. Sitting alongside over 100 Mercedes-Benz models are brands such as smart, Maybach and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
At the official opening of Mercedes-Benz World, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management DaimlerChrysler and Head of Mercedes Car Group said: “The automotive world is a highly competitive one and the success of all brands is constantly under attack. As manufacturing and design standards have risen in all cars, brand differentiation becomes more and more difficult. There are several brand attractions to entertain visitors: Build - a 3D simulator ride which takes you along the production line of a Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class; Solve - an interactive problem-solving laboratory; a Brand Gallery showcasing a number of iconic cars including the legendary 300 SL Gullwing Coup� as well as a gourmet restaurant, caf�, boutiques a dedicated KidsZone aptly named Play' and a range of conference facilities for up to 300 delegates.
Mercedes-Benz World expects to attract 300,000 visitors a year. Within a construction time of just two and a half years, DaimlerChrysler has transformed the dilapidated 155 acre site, which includes stretches of the original Brooklands track (now a listed Ancient Monument) into a facility which can be enjoyed by the whole local community.
Integral to the development have been the construction of a flood compensation scheme which will offer flood protection from the River Wey to local homes and businesses, and the regeneration of a 60 acre community park – the latter will be handed back to Elmbridge Borough Council following the opening of Mercedes-Benz World. Sections of the original Brooklands circuit have also been rescued from further decay and the famous Railway Straight has been re-opened after 50 years.
Wilfried Steffen continued: “I like to think that the opening of Mercedes-Benz World will benefit the whole local community and has enhanced this historic site. We hope that local people will once again enjoy the community park and appreciate the facilities that Mercedes-Benz World has to offer.”
Mercedes-Benz World will open to the public on October 29th. It will be open from 10am to 7pm, seven days a week (except Christmas Day and Boxing Day) and admission is free. There will be additional charges for Driving Experience packages.

DaimlerChrysler first in the world to effectuate the new technology
In future, motorists will be able to detect danger even if the danger spot lies around the next bend or over the horizon. This has now been successfully verified by DaimlerChrysler experts and their partners in a field test conducted at the conclusion of the "WILLWARN" (Wireless Local Danger Warning) European research project. During the course of this test, five vehicles equipped with WLAN-based radio technology used the "Car-2-X Communication" system to radio details of critical situations detected by their on-board sensors – fog, black ice or obstacles on the road such as broken-down vehicles – to following cars. These early warnings enabled the drivers of the cars behind to prepare for the danger and adapt their speed in plenty of time.
DaimlerChrysler had already tested this technology some six years ago – a world first at the time – by sending the first ever inter-communicating vehicle fleet out onto the road as part of the "FleetNet" research project. This field test demonstrated that WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) technology, which had already proven a success when used for wireless Internet access, also allowed vehicles to communicate with each other. One of the key benefits is that expensive, fixed-installation transmitting and receiving devices are not required, since the cars themselves act as both transmitters and receivers. The cars establish an ad-hoc radio network and send any necessary warnings to all other vehicles within a radius of around 500 metres. For vehicles outside of this radio range, the cars act as relays and pass on any warnings in much the same way as a relay runner would hand over a baton. No additional sensors are required to detect critical situations, since the necessary information is provided by the anti-lock braking system (ABS), the Electronic Stability Program (ESP�), the steering-angle sensors, the outside thermometer or the navigation system.
The DaimlerChrysler engineers incorporated the key groundwork laid during the course of the "FleetNet" project into the subsequent "NOW" (Network On Wheels) programme (a German cooperation project) and the current "WILLWARN" project. Their aim was to use the experience gained to work together with partners from the automotive components and electronics industries in order to further develop and standardise this promising technology whilst also securing the rights to use the required frequencies. The DaimlerChrysler specialists also supplied information to partners who only joined the project at a later stage, quickly realising that the only way to establish a fully-functioning WLAN radio network that would benefit all road users was to cooperate with other car manufacturers and the relevant authorities. After all, for an ad hoc radio network to be of any use, enough vehicles have to be equipped with the necessary technology.
Radio beacons at the side of the road are required in order to ensure that the first vehicles to be equipped with such a system benefit immediately. These stationary radio nodes could also be used to provide traffic control centres with additional and better information. However, direct contact with the Internet and its numerous fields of application is also possible. In addition to warning motorists of critical situations in advance, the new radio network could therefore also be used to improve the flow of traffic: communicating cars could guide their occupants away from traffic congestion or even prevent tailbacks from occurring at all.
DaimlerChrysler was also one of the instigators behind the European "Car2Car Communication Consortium" and is involved in the American Vehicle-Infrastructure Integration Initiative. These projects lay the political foundations for vehicle communication in Europe and America and have the aim of accelerating the process of standardisation.

Nissan Qashqai Ready for Production
Nissan’s latest model, the QASHQAI, will begin rolling off the production line today at its plant in Sunderland.
QASHQAI is a compact crossover, combining the best attributes of a traditional family hatchback with the option of advanced 4x4 capability.
Around 130,000 will be produced in Sunderland, alongside NOTE, Primera, Micra and Micra C+C, potentially increasing total annual volume to around 400,000 units by the end of 2007 – a plant record.
QASHQAI’s arrival rounds off one of Sunderland’s busiest periods in its 20-year history with three new model launches within the last 16 months.
Vice President of UK Manufacturing, Trevor Mann, said: “This is a very important day for our plant as QASHQAI will spearhead Nissan’s drive for sustained, profitable growth in Europe.
“As such, the Sunderland workforce has been given a great deal of responsibility. But they have earned the right to build this car through their continued hard work and excellent track record in terms of productivity and reliability.
“I would also like to thank both national and local government and regional development agencies for their continued support, as well as the unstinting efforts of all our suppliers.”
QASHQAI represents a total investment of €322.8 m and will secure more than 3,000 jobs at the plant and within the regional supply chain. It has also created 200 temporary and 100 trainee posts at the plant.
Around 80% of QASHQAI production will be exported, the majority for sale within Europe. The car will also be shipped to numerous overseas markets such as the Middle East, Australia, South Africa as well as Japan – making it only the second Sunderland-built model to be exported to the Japanese market. The first being the 1996 model Primera.
Furthermore, QASHQAI is the first new model to be built down the plant’s recently installed ‘Nissan Integrated Manufacturing System’. This is a new, flexible line being adopted at Nissan plants around the world. Its many benefits over a conventional line include a shorter lead time, improved ergonomics, multi-model, random sequence production and increased integration with suppliers.
From today, the car will ramp up to full production volume in just 4 weeks, ensuring dealers across Europe are fully stocked ready for the car’s start of sale date at the end of February 2007.
Customers will be able to choose between 3 trim grades and 4 engine options. Two petrol units, a 1.6 and 2.0-litre, will be available in February, as will a 1.5 diesel. An all-new 2.0 diesel engine will join the line up from April next year.

New VW group chairman and Autocar award-winner Martin Winkerkorn (right) is considering offloading the underachieving car manufacturer Seat. That�s the word circulating in Europe this morning after an interview that high-level VW board members gave to German industry magazine Automobilwoche recently.
Seat�s plans for future success took a sizeable blow last Friday when the decision was made to build Audi�s new A1-platform, the basis for its new entry-level model due in 2009, not in Seat�s Martorell plant, but in VW�s Brussels facility. Production of the new baby Audi would have been of huge importance to returning Seat to money-making ways; now, it�ll have to find another route back into the black.
Having overseen the operations of the troubled Spanish marquee as head of Audi, Winterkorn is believed to have become frustrated with its continuing unprofitability. Outgoing VW chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder opposed the sale of Seat on the grounds that selling it would mean giving away too much of VW�s core technology; current VW brand boss Wolfgang Bernhard is also rumoured to oppose the sale of the marque but, just as Pischetsrieder is no longer a bar to its sale, Bernhard�s rumoured departure from the VW group could remove a strong advocate of the brand.
If the new head of Audi, who is due to be appointed today, can also be persuaded that selling Seat is in VAG�s interests, it�s highly likely that the maker�s days under VW control will be numbered.

Now, U.K. trade publication Just-Auto is reporting Ford could bring many of its European offerings to the United States as soon as next year. Models currently being considered include the Euro Focus, the all-new Mondeo, and the S-Max and Galaxy people movers. Further details were not given, but the models being looked at seem like obvious choices. Ford fans have been particularly adamant that the automaker bring the European Focus (pictured) stateside.
Most previous reports have indicated Ford had no plans to directly import its Euro-spec vehicles to the 'States. However, the company's dire financial situation may be prompting some "bold moves" on the part of Ford's management. Stay tuned�

Saab 900 passes one-million mile mark
This isn't exactly new news since it happened back in September, but a search of our archives shows that we didn't cover the fact that in a little over 17 years, traveling salesman Peter Gilbert racked up 1,001,385 miles, a distance equal to 40 times around the Earth, in his 1989 Saab 900 SPG.
Amazingly, other than a hood replacement and a "few other parts" due to eight deer collisions and a transmission overhaul at 200,000 miles, the vehicle still wears most of its original equipment. Gilbert states that at the 600,000-mile mark it wasn't using any oil, which he attributes to meticulous maintenance using synthetic fluids. It was then that he thought it might just go a million miles, and it did. In fact, Gilbert thinks it might go a million more if it weren't for the harsh Wisconsin winters that have taken their toll on the frame and body.
After mileage verification from Saab, the vehicle was donated to the Wisconsin Automotive Museum, which is home to a number of rare vehicles. Since then, Gilbert has purchased another Saab, with just a few less miles.
Interestingly enough, while a handful of vehicles have reached the million-mile mark, including this Dodge Ram, only one has been officially recorded as reaching two million miles... a Volvo P1800: http://www.castrol.c...ntentId=7006691
