Mi-a picat o bomba atomica in cap!

Inside story: new Mazda 3
Mazda is putting the finishing touches to a comprehensively reworked version of the company’s Golf-sized 3, ahead of an expected launch next spring.
The heavily disguised prototype, pictured testing in Iceland, was described by Mazda engineers as “90 per cent finished”.
The 3 is a vital model for the company, having sold well in all the major world markets since its launch.
Although based on the existing car, the new 3 will get an extensive reskinning, marked out by distinctive ‘ridges’ and scalloped surfaces that hint at the surface treatment of the BMW 1-series.
The new 3 also gets styling influences from the RX-8 coup with more pronounced front wings and an RX-8-style nose design.
The interior has been redesigned and features a sweeping new design language with a very distinctive centre console and bold, modern switchgear.
Mazda has applied weight-saving measures to the revamped model, though a serious breakthrough in weight reduction is expected in a few years’ time, when the all-new Mazda 3 arrives.
Although no details have yet emerged on the extent of the changes to the chassis, the car is in line for some impressive under-bonnet technology.
Mazda engineers have developed an all-new 2.0-litre direct injection petrol engine – thought to be good for 150bhp – as well as a new 2.2-litre turbodiesel unit that could be used in the next-generation 3 MPS instead of today’s turbocharged petrol engine.
Company sources say the 2.2 diesel, which is expected to produce 185bhp, has the economy of a 2.0-litre diesel, but with considerably better power and torque. This diesel engine will also be fitted to the CX-7 SUV and Mazda’s Mondeo-rivalling 6 range later next year.
The new SISS stop-start system will also be available on the new Mazda 3. SISS stops the engine when the car is travelling below 2mph and in neutral, ensuring that the pistons stop in the optimum position to be restarted by an injection of fuel directly into the cylinder.
Mazda says the restart time of 0.35sec is half that of rival systems. Overall fuel economy should improve by up to 10 per cent.
The new 3 cannot come soon enough for Mazda in the US. After a strong sales start to the year, the Japanese car maker was hit by the global economic turbulence, with the Mazda 3 being particularly hard hit.
However, Mazda in the UK is still performing strongly, with sales in September down just over 1.5 per cent and down less than one per cent for the first nine months of the year.

Drive test
Driving the new Mazda 3
After a short, but fast drive around the Icelandic coast in the late-model 3 prototypes, there’s no doubt that Mazda has made a major leap forward with its new direct-injection engines.
The new 2.0-litre DI engine – driving a very slick six-speed manual ‘box – is impressively smooth, refined and torquey.
While the revamped 3 still delivers the sensation of being a more compact, handy and pointable car than is common in this class, this petrol engine feels broad shouldered and bigger than its quoted capacity. It has something of feel of the old Golf V5 – a relatively compact car with a satisfyingly punchy engine.
However, the real surprise comes from the 2.2-litre diesel. Not only is this motor also exceptionally refined, it also has quite exceptional pace, especially in the compact 3. Very well matched with the ratios in the six-speed ‘box, the 2.2 had standout overtaking ability – always a good indication of real-world performance. Indeed, such is the engine’s mid-range muscle, Mazda engineers admitted that this model has superior performance to the current 3 MPS.
One problem that affected both cars was tyre noise, long a weak spot on certain Mazda models. But defining the extent of the problem was very difficult because not only are Iceland’s roads some of the noisiest in the developed world, these prototype cars didn’t have the final specification (quieter) tyres fitted.
Even so, it's clear that the next Mazda 3 will be a big improvement over the current car.

'Although based on the existing car, the new 3 will get an extensive reskinning...'
(Megane3, Golf6, Pug 308).

Official press release
HIROSHIMA, Japan - Mazda Motor Corporation has confirmed that the sedan version of the all-new Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan), fully redesigned for the first time in 5 years, will be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19, 2008.
The covers will be pulled off during Mazda's press conference from 12:20 to 12:45 (local time) revealing the all-new Mazda3, the latest evolution of Mazda's Zoom-Zoom spirit.
Every element of the all-new Mazda3 has been developed for heightened exhilaration, with a more refined sporty ride, top class fuel economy and quietness. Environmental and safety features, based on Mazda's long-term "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom" vision, aim to achieve a balance with fun-to-drive. Add in a new expressive face and Mazda's dynamic design elements, and the all-new Mazda3 is everything a driver could ask for in a sports compact.
The brand new version of Mazda's best-selling sports compact carries forward the heritage of Mazda and the pedigree of the current Mazda3. Since its launch in 2003, the current Mazda3 has sold approx. 1.8 million vehicles in over 100 countries and has won more than 90 global motoring awards to date. The Mazda3 accounts for almost one in three Mazdas sold every year.
Following the world debut of the North American specification sedan with 2.0- and 2.5-liter engines at the show, the five-door hatchback version will be revealed in line with Mazda's global sales schedule.
