The Volkswagen Golf, for much of the automotive world is an unshakable rock. This is the sort of car that breaks records, sets the benchmark and shocks people in pure numbers. You could look at it as if it were the leader of the C-Segment group, which currently consists of the Peugeot 307, Renault Mgane, Opel Astra, Ford Focus and many others. Since the Mk.IV started production in 1997 (though it didn't show up in North America until 1999.5) some of its competitors have caught up, but that's about to change with the all new, fifth-generation Golf. Barely one week after Opel introduced the successor to the Astra, VW's gone about and done the same to keep their breadwinner fresh. The first thing that's to be noticed is that the Golf is significantly bigger. At 4204 mm in length, 1759 mm wide, and 1483 mm high, it's bigger than the car it replaces in every dimension. Up front, this frees up extra room for passengers and cargo. Those who use the rear seats will be glad to see an increase of 65 mm of legroom, while trunk space grows to 347 liters.
Excellent range of engines, plus a new multi-link rear suspension make for a killer package.
Every single Golf has been nothing but an evolution of the previous. The stylistic jump between any of the generations has been little, totaling smoother edges, or more rounded curves of the original ItalDesign car. But between the previous generation and this new car, the jump is huge. The Golf now resembles much of the competition in a 'stack 'em high' tall and blobby shell sort of way. Most of the uproar is brought by the Golf's new face. Volkswagen has mixed in aspects of its top of the line, luxurious Phaeton to group together a new family image - particularly the grille and taillights. That's put in with a sleek and very aerodynamically silhouette, and this is what makes the 2004 Golf.
Though Volkswagen did not issue photos of the Golf's interior, we suspect it to be fashioned similar to that of Touran. This means functionality and quality, without the unnecessary goods of attention-diverting gadgets. Interestingly, what was noted was the Climatronic climate control system. It functions in a variety of ways to help the driver. For example, when reversing, the system will automatically switch to circulating air so no exhaust gasses can enter. When the windshield wipers are in use, the system will pump in fresh air to prevent the interior from fogging up. Much like the previous Golf, one can have a basic, bare-bones car with nothing in it, to one that's decked out with leather, wood, and other luxurious items.
An absolutely huge variety of engines has been planned for the fifth generation Golf, with emphasis put on diesels. The brand new 2.0 liter TDI engine seen in the A3 and A4 amongst has made its way into the new Golf, creating 140 horsepower. A whole host of smaller diesels will be available, but we're eagerly awaiting the crown - a 2.5 liter inline-five TDI engine that creates a whopping 175 horses. Most of the engines that we've come to know - 1.8t, 2.0, V5 have all been dropped for the Mk.V Golf. VW has switched nearly all but its top-end motors for FSI direct injection engines. Ranging from a basic 1.4 liter 75 horsepower engine to a 2.0 liter FSI with 148 horsepower VW offers performance and economy. Sitting at the top of the range looks to be a 3.2 liter V6 engine modified to give out 250 hp. Depending on power output and model, a variety of five speed manual and automatic will be available, as will a six-speed manual and the all-new DSG transmission.
So there you have it - the new Golf in a nutshell. The new Golf is set to continue the ambitious standards of Volkswagen. If it's been able to sell 22 million copies in 29 years, who knows what the future has to bring. Look for the Golf's premiere at the IAA in Frankfurt, Germany with sales as early as this October. Meanwhile, North Americans will have to wait, as it has been unannounced when this Golf will arrive on our shores.

The Golf, the most successful German car of all time, reaches its fifth model generation in the autumn of 2003. Its design and technical features are more supreme, more dynamic than ever before.
The new model will be recognised immediately as the latest version of a truly original concept, the 'Golf class'. The styling, with its characteristic C-post, powerfully shaped rear end, emphatically sporting nose and muscular, wedge-shaped outline, communicates a new, supremely dynamic personality.
The front-end styling is new in every detail, and optimised for low aerodynamic drag. Another unmistakable feature are the twin circular headlights with the glass tapering toward the centre of the car and with horizontal flashing turn indicators in "Phaeton style. Above the headlights, the side panels now rise more in a more pronounced curve than before and as part of the opening section of the engine hood, create a slightly V-shaped outline together with the radiator grille, that emphasises the dynamic character of this new Volkswagen even more.
The rear of the body is styled in an equally powerful manner: the rear body shoulders emphasise the Golf's strong visual presence, the bold rear lights with their twin circular elements are another immediately recognisable feature of current Volkswagen design. Half of each rear light cluster is incorporated into the tailgate, which is neatly laid out, with a large rear window that ensures a good view to the rear and, together with the side windows extending back as far as the C-post, for visual lightness and elegance. The overall effect is an emotive one that makes the new Golf seem even more agile and dynamic than any of the previous model generations.

What's new?
The engine. This is the 168bhp version of the 2.0-litre pumpe dse unit, with a whopping 258lb ft of torque.
What's it like?
Grunty. Theres no shortage of urge in any gear, although dont expect much action below 1750rpm, where maximum torque is achieved. The 0-62mph time of 8.2sec is decent, but its the in-gear acceleration that most impresses: this is a very quick car on the motorway.
Its also rather raucous; you wont mistake this engine for anything but a diesel, although it is more muted when cruising.
Should I buy one?
Perhaps. If you want frugality (47.8mpg on the combined cycle) with good performance, then the 19,095 GT seems like a fine option.
Until, that is, you try the similar-looking Golf GT Twincharger petrol, which, although it has less torque, has the same horsepower, is only slightly less economical (44.1mpg), far more refined and costs 1000 less. 1000 will buy you over 1100 litres of petrol enough for more than 10,000 miles.
