Volkswagen says Euro owners of rigged TDI cars will not receive compensation
The Volkswagen Group has announced European owners of affected TDI cars will not receive compensations.
A couple of weeks ago, Volkswagen of America revealed the “Goodwill Package” tailored to US owners of affected TDI cars. It contains a $500 prepaid Visa gift card, a $500 gift card to be used at any VW dealership, and three years of 24-hour road assistance. If affected Euro owners were hoping to get a similar deal, Volkswagen says that won’t happen.
In an interview with Automotive News Europe, a company spokesman clearly said that “financial compensation will exclusively be offered to customers in the U.S. and Canada.” Volkswagen does promise it will try to take the necessary measures to make sure Euro owners will be inconvenienced as little as possible and will pay all of their the CO2 tax differences.
While in United States there are around 482,000 affected owners, on the old continent there are no less than 8.5 million cars equipped with rigged TDI engines. Volkswagen explains that only US customers will get the aforementioned “Goodwill Package” because they bought a car advertised as a “Clean Diesel.” In addition, VW specifies these clients purchased a vehicle equipped with an engine belonging in a niche market compared to Europe where more than 50% of new cars sold are diesels.
Volkswagen mentions it has developed a fix for the 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI EA189 engines and will soon have ready a software tweak for the remaining 1.2 TDI also part of the EA189 family.

Volkswagen under investigation for tax evasion
The bad news continues for Volkswagen as German prosecutors are investigating the company for tax evasion.
The investigation is reportedly focused on five employees and whether the Volkswagen Group committed tax evasion as a result of underreporting CO2 emissions for hundreds of thousands of vehicles from Audi, Seat, Skoda, and Volkswagen. Prosecutors have also said they are looking into the possibility that the company committed fraud.
There's no word on how long the investigation will take but a member of the prosecutor's office told Automotive News Europe the damages caused by the possible tax evasion are "not insignificant."
Since Volkswagen scandals are an increasingly common occurrence, we'll remind you the company found "irregularities" with their CO2 emissions data earlier this month as part of their internal investigation into the Dieselgate debacle. Upon further review, the company determined that approximately 430,000 vehicles from the 2016 model year were affected. However, that figure is expected to climb to roughly 800,000 vehicles by the time older models are included in the tally.
Volkswagen has previously said they will cooperate with the German Federal Vehicle and Transport Authority (KBA) to determine new CO2 figures for the affected vehicles. The company has also promised to take full responsibility for the issue and pay all taxes arising from the CO2 irregularities.

Volkswagen has unveiled their long-awaited fix for the Dieselgate scandal in Europe.
Presented to Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, the fix applies to EA 189 four-cylinder TDI engines that displace 1.6- and 2.0-liters.
First up, vehicles equipped with the 1.6-liter TDI engine will be outfitted with a new mesh "flow transformer". Volkswagen says it "calms the swirled air flow in front of the air mass sensor and will thus decisively improve the measuring accuracy of the air mass sensor." The company will also update the engine's software. The entire process should take less than an hour to complete.
Models equipped with 2.0-liter TDI engines will only require a minor software update. As a result, the process is only expected to take about 30 minutes.
Volkswagen says the updates were designed to ensure the engines meet emission requirements without any adverse effects on performance or fuel consumption. However, the company cautioned every variant hasn't been tested yet.
The fix has been approved by the Federal Motor Transport Authority and Volkswagen intends to begin a recall in January. The company will be contacting customers and will work with them to ensure the process is as painless as possible.
While the fix covers most of models affected by the Dieselgate scandal, the company intends to present the "final technical solution" for vehicles equipped with 1.2-liter diesel engines later this month. Like the 2.0-liter TDI engine, the fix for the 1.2-liter engine is only expected to comprise of a software update.

Volkswagen will take a massive €20 billion bridging loan to cover diesel scandal costs.
It was more than two months ago when Volkswagen’s diesel scandal became public and the company is already facing some big troubles. Following an announcement that VW’s US sales are down by almost 25 percent in November, now it has emerged Europe’s biggest automaker has agreed the terms of a €20 billion bridging loan with several banks.
Reuters is citing sources close to Volkswagen that say thirteen banks have offered to lend either €1.5 billion or €2.5 billion. The Germans are said to decide how to allocate the loan in the coming days, probably next week.
Last month Volkswagen said it will cut back on versions and trim options in order to save around €1.9 billion. The company also announced the next-gen Phaeton will be delayed as a part of a bigger plan to save around €1 billion.
However, VW also announced it will try to protect jobs in the company. “Jobs are a very valuable asset,” Wolfgang Porsche, chairman of Porsche Automobil Holding SE, commented at a gathering of 20,000 workers at VW's main plant in Wolfsburg. “This asset mustn't be squandered.”
