When Ferrari unveils a new road car, it's big news. Slightly less so when the Prancing Horse takes the wraps off the next season's F1 race car; the strict FIA regulations pretty much have Formula One designers' and engineers' jewels in a vice, so each new car is by and large the same as the old one, with slight modifications. The devil is in the details on this red screamer don't expect some groundbreaking innovation like a third set of wheels or a vacuum-powered ground-effects system.
Ferrari took the wraps off the F2007, its fifty-third F1 car, at a press conference Sunday in Maranello. Although some details will be tweaked before and throughout the season, this is fundamentally the car which Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa will be driving in pursuit of the 2007 driver's and constructor's championship. Visibly the car looks mostly the same as the 2006-spec 248 it replaces. The suspension was redone primarily for aerodynamic efficiency; the side-pods were reshaped to accommodate the new cooling system; the air intake atop the car was changed; the rear end of the car is narrower thanks to the revised carbon fiber gearbox housing; and the entire car rides on a longer wheelbase. In meeting 2007 safety requirements, the weight of the car is up nearly ten kilograms over the 248.
After sponsors Vodaphone left for McLaren, Italia Telecom stepped up their sponsorship with Alice, their broadband internet company whose logo appears on the new car that gives up some white in favor of more red. Otherwise, Marlboro stays on as title sponsor, Shell picks up a bit of Vodaphone's slack, while Martini and other minor sponsors stay with the team for the 2007 season.
Like all F1 cars, it's built around a carbon fiber tub to which all the components, from the suspension to the engine, are mounted. FIA regulations restrict engine development, so the 056 engine used last year carries over with few modifications: the combustion chamber, valves, and inlet and exhaust chambers were changed to optimize the torque curve; the pistons were redesigned for reliability at the 19,000 rpm redline and the cooling systems were reconfigured. The 32-valve aluminum V8 is mounted longitudinally as a stressed member of the chassis, hooked up to a seven-speed paddle-shifted transmission.
2007 should be an interesting season for Scuderia Ferrari as they step into the post-Schumacher era, the top team management changes around, Felipe Massa steps out of the champion's shadow and Kimi Raikonnen throws off the shackles of a prohibitively underperforming car.

It's easy to scoff at NASCAR as a sports car enthusiast and fan of other types of motorsports. Heck, even to a British TV presenter, NASCAR offers a lot to ridicule. But as a recently retired seven-time Formula 1 champion, Michael Schumacher seems uniquely qualified to critique this type of automotive entertainment. So he stepped up and said he didn't understand how former competitor Juan Pablo Montoya could be drawn to stock car racing. Perhaps Schumacher's view of NASCAR is a bit nave, as he was quoted as saying, "What do you do in NASCAR? What is exciting there? I can't see that, running around on ovals."
Obviously Schumacher is unaware that only 90% of NASCAR actually involves running around on ovals. The other ten percent is split between drinking beer, pitching beer, and judging wet t-shirt contests. So there is at least SOME obvious reason to like it. But in answer to Michael's criticism, NASCAR team owner Ray Evernham has extended an open invitation to MS to try a stock car and see what it's like. Evernham apparently thinks some seat time would help change the champ's mind and show off the huge technical strides NASCAR has made in recent years. He wasn't referring to SPEED in HD, and believe it or not, he was serious.

BMW has written another chapter in motorsport history on the legendary Nordschleife at the Nrburgring. Yesterday, a modern Formula 1 vehicle was driven round the 20.8 kilometre race track for the first time in 31 years in front of a crowd numbering 45,000.
BMW Sauber F1 Team driver Nick Heidfeld was extremely enthusiastic after three laps in the F1.06: "This drive was simply incredible. I thought it would be great to drive on the Nordschleife before I started out. But it was even better than I had expected. This racing track is the best in the world. Id really like to have emptied the tank."
"It was a very special moment when I left the grand prix circuit in the direction of the Nordschleife. I was really shaken up at the Bergwerk section and on the Dttinger Hhe. I'll never forget today as long as I live. Another particularly special experience has now joined the many fantastic childhood memories and racing successes."
BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen said: "We wanted to give fans a special treat. And I believe we have done this with the entire BMW motor sport programme. The BMW M3 GTR that Olaf Manthey presented today was welcomed like an old friend. The car is actually much too athletic for the museum. Naturally, the high point was Nicks drive with the F1.06. We had implored him to be careful.
The day was a homage to the fans and to this unique circuit in the world of racing. For once, the lap times were a secondary consideration."
Despite unusually hard demonstration tyres and short transmission ratio, Heidfeld notched up a top speed of 275 km/h on the long straight called the 'Dttinger Hhe'. The second lap was his fastest lap and took 8:34 minutes. A camera car took shots of the 29-year-old on some sections of all three laps and Heidfeld slowed down for the photo calls.
The F1.06 was adjusted for maximum ground clearance to drive on this uneven traditional circuit - four centimetres at the front axle, eight centimetres at the rear axle. No other modifications were carried out on the vehicle. One special measure was necessary for wireless communication. Team Manager Beat Zehnder travelled with the camera helicopter in order to secure the radio link over the entire distance instead of sitting on the pit wall as usual.

Intrebat de reporterii spinioli daca va concura la McLaren si in sezonul viitor, dublul campion mondial s-a marginit sa declare: "Nu stiu, nu stiu. Vom vedea".
Un alt reporter l-a intrebat daca este adevarat ca se astepta sa fie tratat altfel de McLaren, dupa ce a sosit la echipa din postura de campion mondial. "Foarte corect.

Just one more Grand Prix with McLaren Mercedes?
Fernando Alonso has signed a letter of intent to rejoin Renault starting next January (2008), according to emerging reports.
Germany's Bild newspaper said the document is the precursor to a definitive three-year contract (2008-2010), but only if the reigning world champion can successfully negotiate an end to his current McLaren deal.
Alonso is currently under contract to McLaren also for 2008, with an option to continue in 2009.
The news of Alonso's likely return to Renault follows reports that Toyota was offering the Spaniard a record retainer to switch to the Japanese car giant for 2008.
The German magazine Sport Bild said the Cologne based team was prepared to fork out (US) $150 million for a three year deal; a comparable amount of money to that earned by Michael Schumacher at Ferrari towards the end of his illustrious career.

For the first time in Formula 1 history, we can look forward to the first night time race which will be held in Singapore on 28th September after the FIA officially confirmed the event. Construction for the new street circuit in the Asian city began in August
It remains to be seen how driving in night time is going to affect the drivers, however it is unlikely to bother current world champion Kimi too much as the Finnish ice man has had to deal with about 3 hours daylight during the winter in his native Finland.
I for one am particularly looking forward to seeing the modified F1 race cars sporting some new cool neon head lights - or is that just my imagination going astray?

The McLaren Formula One team today announced that it came to an agreement with Fernando Alonso that it would be in the best of interests of both parties to bring the relationship to an end. The Spaniard had an ongoing contract with the Woking based team for another two seasons.
Fernando Alonso will now be on the lookout for a new challenge in Formula 1. It is very likely he will return at Renault. Team boss Flavio Briatore never made a secret of it he loved to see Alonso return at Renault.
