Car & Driver tests the M5 and gets a much healthier acceleration figure than BMW's own underrated 4.4 seconds (0 to 100 km/h)

Here's a little comfort for M5 lovers who had to get a little defensive about the car's official 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 4.4 seconds.

Now, American car magazine Car & Driver has clocked the 2012 BMW F10 M5's 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) time at 3.7 seconds, which makes it competitive with rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG (with performance pack). The F10 M5 also covered the quarter mile in 12.0 seconds. Complete results of the testing will appear in Car & Driver's December 2011 issue.

BMW has a reputation for underrating their cars' performance values so it's not surprising that an outside test could wrench a "little" more out of the M5 than that official 4.4 seconds figure.

A recent dealer presentation in the Netherlands has revealed some further specifications and more concrete evidence for BMW's long rumored 5-Series diesel from M division.
According to the leaked specs, the tri-turbo six-cylinder diesel will benefit from 381 PS (375 bhp / 280 kW). Although this doesn't sound like M division territory, the torque figure of over 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) makes it a viable alternative to the BMW 550i with 408 PS (402 hp / 300 kW) and 600 Nm (440 lb-ft) of torque.
Officially, BMW has yet to confirm the model representative of a diesel M5. However, M division's global marketing manager, Brian Watts has previously confirmed the model is under consideration.
In light of this new information, speculation abounds about the M550d being offered in both F10 sedan and F11 wagon variants. Furthermore, the tri-diesel engine could also find its way into the X5M/X6M SAVs.

pina una alta, mai realist, a aparut la vinzare 525d xDrive cu 2.0 Twin turbo diesel de 218 CP si 450 Nm, si-a luat un tip de pe bmwclub, cica e foarte tare masina, se misca foarte foarte bine. E un tip care a avut si M3, X3 sd, si X5 30d, X6 30d, X1, X3 etc. Cica ar fi primul motor cu 2000 cmc are are si peste 100 kmh suflul unuia cu 3000 cmc.

interesanta masina. pretul cred ca este unul corect. nu stiam ca exista/va exista twin turbo-ul de 2,0 pe 5-er.
si un 3-er ar da bine cu motorul asta. si cu xDrive...

o sa fie si pe 3ar, dar mai incolo, in 1-2 ani. Eu astept cu mare interes motorul asta pe X3.

am fost azi pe la bavaria sa vorbesc de un x1 pentru maica-mea si am sfarsit prin a face un drive test cu un 525xd.

Masina e cum o stiti, mie personal mi se pare f10-le ca e cel mai reusit cinciar de dupa e34, in interior este intr-o clasa aparte, in acelasi loc cu a6 si peste e class, pentru gusturile mele, sunt subiectiv aicea oricum, dar motorul este ... visul unei nopti de vara ca sa zic asa, in combinatie cu cutia in 8 trepte dotata cu 5 ambreiaje rezultatul este absolut spectaculos, in cifre 218 cp si 450 cuplu in plaja 1500-2500, in termeni reali la 120km/h daca apesi accleratia pleaca de sub tine de zici ca decoleaza. Daca nu as fi stiut ca e vorba de un motor de 2 litri as fi jurat ca are 3 litri sub capota. Dinamica de exceptie, partea foarte faine este ca masina vine cu patru setari diferite pentru directie, raspuns motor la acceleratie si comportament cutie, sport+/sport/confort/eco pro, se selecteaza de langa schimbator, unde la alte modele este setarea de suspensie si schimbarea de comportament este absolut sesizabila, mai ales intre sport-confort-eco, la eco cred ca pur si simplu se "castreaza" masina. Daca x3-ul nu era luat as fi avut o dilema mare intre x3/utilitate si 525/spectaculozitate.

Oricum x3-ul cu acest motor ar face furori, sunt curios daca au sa-l puna, dar personal incep sa am oaresce indoieli din cauza ca ar face 3.0d-ul inutil ... cel putin din punctul meu de vedere.

BMW M5 with six-speed manual confirmed

After months of speculation, BMW has confirmed plans to offer a six-speed manual on the US-spec M5.

Cited as a "polular choice" on the previous model, the six-speed manual will be available as a no-cost option when the new M5 is launched this summer. Specifications were not released, but the gearbox has a short throw linkage and optimized ratios for outstanding acceleration and fuel efficiency.

As we have previously reported, the M5 is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 660 PS (412 kW / 552 hp) and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque. When connected to a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission, the car accelerates from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds and hits a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) or 305 km/h (190 mph) with the M Driver's Package.

Following yesterday's announcement of M Performance Automobiles, new details are starting to emerge about brand's product lineup.
In an interview with the DPA news service, BMW M GmbH President Friedrich Nitschke reportedly confirmed the M550d xDrive will be launched in March and offered as a sedan and wagon. It is expected to powered by a tri-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine with 381 PS (280 kW / 375 hp) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque. This should enable the sedan to average 6.3 L/100 km (37.3 mpg US / 44.8 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of 167 g/km.
Interestingly, the M550d will reportedly be joined by an X5 and X6 with the same engine. We've already seen teaser videos of the latter model, but this is the first time we've heard about the X5 variant.
